Lot 105
Coltrane, John (1926-1967) Legendary American jazz saxophonist, band leader, and composer; his musical innovations broke formal thematic and harmonic restrictions in jazz imrovisation setting new standards. Unique early Autograph Musical Quotation Signed "J", 10½ x 7¼ in., n.p., n.d. With a pencil Coltrane drew a large G-clef and stave lines on a blank sheet, labeling bars and spaces, adding a pale yellow crayon drawing of a figure in profile. A "key" like this would only be necessary when beginning the study of music theory; the young Coltrane probably did not own stave paper yet and copied this from a method book. Verso of page has the Coltrane estate's copyright stamp, "2005 Jowcol Music." Very good; light toning and soiling; ragged right edge, affecting nothing; and an ink blotch to the right of Coltrane's initial. Crayon sketch is very faint. An early AMQS from one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.
