Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with slightly reflective fields on both sides. The Small 18 over Large 18 feature is bold.

Satiny mint luster show through in the fields and protected areas. The only marks are a small planchet void in the field left of the lower point of star 10 and a spot of darker toning in the field before the neck. LDS, die state c. The small die lumps under the date are gone. Just a hint of rub on the highest points from mint state. Our grade is AU58. The attribution and Rasmussen provenance are noted on the NGC label.

Otherwise this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. Lustrous steel brown and light chocolate with generous traces of the original mint red remaining on both sides. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a. The die defects under the date are bold (these lumps were once considered evidence of a 40 over 39 overdate) and there are several rim cud breaks from under the 18 clockwise to star 2.

Only two defects are notable on this otherwise choice example: a small carbon spot in the dentils above star 5 and a narrow planchet void at the bottom of the reverse (as struck). Just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. M-LDS, die state d, with a fine die crack that bisects the obverse from the dentils just below star 4 to the dentils right of star 11. Our grade is AU58 net AU50+ for the planchet void, tied for CC#9. Comes with a very nice provenance.

The strike is quite nice for this variety, although there is minor weakness at the top of the ear, as always. Tied for CC#9. 1843 N-8 R2. AU-55. Petite Head with Small Letters Reverse. Repunched 184. Choice frosty chocolate brown. Virtually flawless, just a few microscopic marks of no significance. Just a hint of rub on the highest points removed from a mint state grade. M-LDS, die state b, with crumbling under the tip of the nose. The repunching on the 184 remains clear. Tied for CC#8.

1843 N-10 R3. EF-40. Petite Head with Small Letters Reverse. Slightly sharper but there is a dull rim nick under the ribbon end. Otherwise this cent is very attractive and nearly flawless. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with frosty luster covering the protected areas on both sides. LDS, die state b. The short point up from the top of the E in CENT is gone, now reduced to a tiny lump. Tied for CC#12. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS61 Brown (NGC label included, and it shows the attribution).

1843 N-11 R2. AU-58. Petite Head with Small Letters Reverse. Choice lustrous light bluish steel and chocolate. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint frost and the eye appeal is excellent. A microscopic tick at the top of the ear and a small planchet flake under star 3 are the best identifying marks. The slightest hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. MDS, die state c, with a die crack from the rim through the I in AMERICA to the T in CENT. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS65 Brown (NGC label included, and it shows the attribution).

1843 N-12 R1. EF-40. Petite Head with Small Letters Reverse. Glossy dark olive and steel with chocolate toning on some of the highpoints. Most likely lightly cleaned and retoned, but the eye appeal is quite nice. Smooth surfaces, just a few trivial contact marks of no significance. Rare M-LDS, die state c, with rim cud breaks at U and NIT. These rim cud breaks are not strong but the margins remain visible.

1843 N-15 R3. EF-45 Plus. Petite Head with Small Letters Reverse. Sharpness near mint state but there are a half dozen dull pinpricks or planchet chips on the cheek and upper neck plus another in the field off the tip of the nose. Highly lustrous chocolate and dark bluish steel brown with traces of mint color showing on both sides. This cent looks choice mint state except for the pinpricks/chips, but they can't be ignored. LDS, die state b. Both dies are well worn and the fine die line at the N in ONE is gone.
