1880 $3 Gold. PCGS graded Genuine, altered surfaces. Our grade is MS-60+. Rare low mintage date as a mere 1,000 were coined. With production really low towards the end of this series, collectors face a challenge when completing a Mint State set of dates. Often, one must have a great deal of patience.

Lot 2128
1882 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck with blazing semi-reflective surfaces throughout. Low mintage date as only 1,500 were struck for circulation. A mint-fresh gold-surfaced coin whose detail in the strike complements the fresh mint bloom. At the moment when luster is a key determinant of the grade, it goes without saying the devices should also be struck boldly by the dies. And here, the coin is bold throughout. This beauty is worthy of a premium bid. Pop 23; 10 finer (PCGS # 8004) .

Historic note: The $3 gold piece was authorized by the Act of February 21, 1853, a very important piece of legislation from a numismatic viewpoint, an act which also affected the silver coinage, namely the reduction in weight of the half dime, dime, quarter, and half dollar, and the addition of arrows alongside the date to indicate the new standard. Whether or not the $3 denomination was actually necessary or worthwhile has been a matter of debate among numismatists for well over a century. At the time of its introduction, 1854, the $3 had as a close companion -- the long established $2.50 quarter eagle.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.

Lot 2129
1886 $3 Gold. PCGS graded MS-63. Well struck with lovely golden toning and prooflike wurfaces. Only 1,000 coins minted of this very elusive circulation-strike issue. Collectors of the series will recognize in the period in which this coin was made, many weak strikes predominate. That is why it is a pleasure to report a strike on this '86 $3 with preciseness only now and then found. The vibrant golden color is beautiful. Pop 6; 6 finer with 5 in 64, 1 in 65 (PCGS # 8008) .
Estimated Value $13,000 - 14,000.
