Lot 2050		1850 Pattern Three Cents. Silver, plain edge. Original. Judd-125. Pollock-147. Rarity 4. PCGS graded Proof 63. A trifle soft in the centers as made, light pastel toning adds to its appeal. No one needs to promote these rare Pattern pieces, they sell themselves. In anticipation of passage of the Coinage Act of March 3, 1851, which authorized a 3c denomination to be struck in silver, the Mint experimented with several proposals for the new design, of which this is one based, surprisingly, on a similar cap-and-rays used on Mexican coins of the day (with the Spanish word LIBERTAD on the cap in place of our English LIBERTY). Lot 2051		1858 Pattern Cent. Copper-nickel, plain edge. Judd-191. Pollock-233. Rarity 5. PCGS graded Proof 64. CAC Approved including an Eagle Eye sticker. This handsome Pattern for a cent combines the Small Letters regular obverse as adopted for circulation mated to the laurel wreath reverse used on the 1859 Indian cents. A very choice example.
