Peace Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1501
1921 Peace Dollar. NGC graded MS-63. Intensely frosty mint surfaces with touches of light golden toning. A blunt impression is sometimes left by the recoil of the dies that struck the 1921 High Relief dollars of 1921; all the same, we can report that this specimen, unlike the others, is outstanding in its detail and sharpness.
Estimated Value $325 - 350.

Lot 1504
1927 Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. A lustrous gem with a hint of light toning starting to form. Completely original with gemmy mint brilliance displaying pulsating misty surfaces. The absence of marks is plain to see either with naked eye, or under a low-power loupe, and is obvious in the photographs (PCGS # 7370) .

Lot 1507
1927-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Totally white. Frosty iridescent patina twinkles over both sides of this handsome, untoned specimen. Taking stock of another key aspect of the grade for any Peace dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, this piece has much sharper than average devices throughout, including centers, rather than a soft, mushy strike as more often seen. Pop 1,223; 64 finer, 62 in 65, 2 in 66 (PCGS # 7372) .
Estimated Value $750 - 800.

Lot 1508
1928 Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. A nice white coin. Lowest mintage among Peace dollars: 360,649. This is an exceptional and attractive '28-P Dollar with a soft satin-like finish that is not at all uncommon for the date. The veil of satin glows. Both sides are untoned with extensive luster over the nearly bagmark-free devices. We do note a minor scuff at the last A in AMERICA, possibly keeping this piece from slipping into the next higher grade. Other than this, both the striking quality and the surface condition draw praise (PCGS # 7373) .
Estimated Value $800 - 850.

Lot 1509
1928 Peace Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. A boldly struck white-surface key date whose high-end depth of detail in the strike complements the equally fresh mint bloom. Rarely will you see a finer looking MS64, they usually have more marks than this, for one thing. A few little scuffs in the surface frost of the reverse is all we can find.
Estimated Value $800 - 850.

Lot 1511
1934-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Key date. A white coin. Only a few bagmarks on the surface, the luster crisp and luminous. It may be difficult for today's buyers to believe, but the 1934-S was once considered to be a more common Peace Dollar in Mint State than, of all issues, the 1925. There was a lapse in production after 1928. This is illustrated in the listings in the Guide Book of United States Coins. Following the election of the Roosevelt administration, however, production resumed in 1934 (when silver dollars were struck at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco) and again in 1935 (Philadelphia and San Francisco). Then it was decided to substitute paper money issues in the form of $1 Silver Certificates of the 1935 Series for public use to replace the more unwieldy heavy coins. The government earned more in seignorage this way (PCGS # 7377) .
Estimated Value $1,850 - 1,900.

Lot 1513
1935-S Peace Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. A fully white coin. This is a beautiful Gem Peace dollar irrespective of date and issuing Mint. Both sides display beaming white luster with a frosty sheen that gleams rhythmically across the surface. The few minute abrasions are well spaced and do not intrude, while the strike impresses us as being sharp throughout. A strong candidate to represent the 1935-S in a high-quality date and mint set of this popular silver dollar Type.
Estimated Value $650 - 700.
