Morgan Dollar 1886-

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 1362
1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Semi key date. Only 110,000 pieces coined. A nice, lustrous example with white clear surfaces surrounding Liberty. Several abrasions are noticeable on the cheek and the obverse field while the reverse exhibits a single distraction on the eagle's breast. Contemporary records do not record why mintage fell off in 1893-95 at the Philadelphia Mint before rebounding from 1896-on. It may have had something to do with economic conditions in those years. Or it could be a surfeit of circulating coins had built up in the Treasury vaults (PCGS # 7228) .
Estimated Value $2,800 - 2,900.

1894 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded AU-58. A nice well struck white coin, and a splendid way to represent this low mintage P-mint release. Having boomed from the 1880s all the way into 1892, production at Phladelphia came off considerably in 1893-1895. In 1894, only 110,000 were minted (PCGS # 7228) .

1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68 Ultra Cameo. A fully white gem key date. Only 880 Proofs struck. Faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies, the hair is crystal clear down to the tiniest little strand at the brow and along Liberty's neck; this does not excludes the key curls above the ear, with only two of them appearing as though fused together. Furthermore, in this full blow by the dies, the viewer is presented with a finely detailed eagle, proud and assured. This side of the coin shows full-featured wings outstretched and a feather-endowed chest projecting from the central part of the design. The main design features are nicely frosted. Hence, the "Ultra Cameo" determination. The coin's obvious perfection speaks for itself: grading Proof 68, it is housed in an NGC holder and will from this time forward remind us just how spectacular these early Morgan dollars are in brilliant Proof condition. Let the current market price be your starting guide for bidding. As seems inevitable whenever a great rarity like a Superb Gem Proof 1895 Morgan dollar changes hands, the interest and value only intensifies, year upon year. Pop 4; 1 finer in 69 (PCGS # 7330) .

Of historic interest: With the circulation strikes either figments of the imagination or (if 12,000 pieces were actually made) lost forever in the mass meltings after World War I, the Proof 1895 Silver Dollar has become one of the roadblocks to assembling the historci and popular Morgan Dollar series. It has been observed by many before us that most of the survivors are prejudiced in one form or another by mishandling and/or crude attempts at cleaning. Gems are rare beyond belief, and highly sought after.
Estimated Value $90,000 - 100,000.

Lot 1377
1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68. A superb gem specimen exhibiting alternating areas of multi-color iridescent toning on each side. Only 880 minted for this key date Proof-only year. Rarest of the rare in the Morgan series, held by all to be the King of the Morgan Dollars and for understandable reasons, only Proofs were minted. Business strikes are unknown. It is from these few specimens that tens of thousands of collectors, if not hundreds of thousands of collectors, must struggle over ownership of the small supply on the market at any one time.

The coin is, in words of one syllable, a knock-out. Viewed under a magnifying glass, but also visible in the photographs, are deep original iridescent shades of color acquired in its years spent in the original tissue wrapper. Where later Proof coins were packaged in either cellophane (1930s-1950s) or flat-pack plastic by the mint, all pre-1916 coinage was shipped in simple jeweler's tissue paper. The tissue was made using sulfur. And it is this naturally occurring element which imparts the marvelous colors you see on the few gem Proofs. This glittering 1895 turns head and draws stares of disbelief. Faithful to every detail from a solid blow by the dies, the hair is finely detailed down to the tiniest hair strand. This includes the sometimes weak curls above the ear; included also in this description of a full blow by the dies is a resplendent eagle, proud and assured, with full-featured wings and a nice feather-encrusted chest projecting from the central part of this side of the design. The coin, grading Proof 68, is housed in NGC holder 1743100-014 and will forever remind us how spectacular these early Morgan dollars were in Proof condition at the time of issue. Don't let the current market disturbance sway you from bidding. As seems inevitable whenever a great rarity like a Superb Gem Proof 1895 Morgan dollar changes hands, the interest and value only increases, year by year. Pop 3; none finer (PCGS # 7330) .

Historic note: At the time this Proof only Dollar was minted in 1895, the executive branch of the American republic was being led by a beefy, 300-pound gentle giant of a President, Stephen Grover Cleveland (1837-1908). As politicians go, Mr. Cleveland was somewhere in-between when it came to the usual foibles and job peddling associated with his profession. He had a conservative philosophy, though, which surfaced in his clashes with followers of the colorful William Jennings Bryan. Cleveland believed a gold standard was the only honest standard for a nation's money. And woe to anyone who should drive this country to socialism by doing away with it! Unfortunately, soon after he attained office, the economy crashed into depression. Throughout his 1892-1896 tenure in office he had to deal with the pain and suffering of his constituents. Although this short look back doesn't affect who buys this silver dollar or not, it is helpful for numismatists to bring together the events surrounding the issuance of such a coin; it gives meaning to a coin.
Estimated Value $80,000 - 90,000.

1895-O Morgan Dollar. NGC graded AU-58. Mostly untoned. Only 450,000 pieces coined. A much scarcer, low mintage date struck at New Orleans. Both sides are untoned but still exhibit silvery iridescence from the ample luster. The central highpoints are barely worn, suggesting that this dollar spent no more than a few months in circulation; certainly a low degree of wear proper for the assigned grade. Quite attractive and a coin that wins it the respect of all due to the few sizeable abrasions (PCGS # 7236) .

1895-S Morgan Dollar. ANACS graded MS-60. Mostly untoned. Only 400,000 pieces struck.
