von Richthofen, Mannfred, Freiherr [Baron] (1892-1918) German fighter pilot, the most successful flying ace of World War I. He flew a red Fokker Dr. I triplane and was known to the Germans as "Der Rote Kampfflieger," to the French as "le Diable Rouge" and to the English-speaking world as "The Red Baron." He claimed 80 aerial victories before being shot down himself on April 21, 1918.

Postcard Photo Signed "Frei v. Richthofen" with his rank "Rittmeister" [Cavalry Captain] and the date " 8.II.18" written in black ink on the lower portion of the photo. Sanke postcard. Photo by C.J. von Dühren. Printed at the top edge is "Unser erfolgreichster Kampf=Flieger / Freiherr von Richthofen" [Our most successful fighter pilot. Baron von Richthofen]. A handsome, waist-length portrait signed two months and three days before his death.

Five Military Books From the Estate of Otto Kruger. Four small World War I era books: The Ship and Gun Drills / U.S. Navy 1914; The Elements of Navigation (1917); Drill Regulations For Signal Troops. 1917; and New Handbook of Military Ssignaling (1917). The first book has Kruger's stamp on cover and inside cover; the other three are signed by Kruger on the first end page. The fifth book is a military yearbook Odyssey of Fighting Two by Lt. Thomas L. Morrissey, 1945. It gives a history of the Fighting Squadron Two and is inscribed to Mr. & Mrs. Otto Kruger by "Mom" Chung.

Group of approximately 15 military signatures, most with rank or title and, representing much of U.S. military history; also included are two British field marshalls: John Denton Pinkstone and Francis Wallace Grenfell. Among the group are: J.A. Anderson, Joseph Hooker, Thomas Jesup, James H. Rogers, John Derby Jr., Charles A. Bele, N.C. McFarland, J.B. Montgomery, Edward R.S. Canby, John Cochrane, Sinclair Gannon, Robert B. McClure, and R. M. O'Reilly. Also in the group are signatures of Secretaries of the Navy R.W. Thompson and William H. Hunt and three letters written to Secretary of War Belknap by D.P. Dyer. Age toning and some staining; very good to fine.
