Arlen, Harold (1905-1986) Prolific American composer, best known for composing the songs from "The Wizard of Oz." Autograph Musical Quotation Inscribed and Signed, "Mary Virginia / Sincerely / Harold Arlen" on the verso of a 2¼ x 3½ in. card with two bars and lyrics, "Some-where Over the Rainbow," n.p., n.d. Fine. Arlen wrote over 400 songs, including "It's Only A Paper Moon," "Stormy Weather," " I've Got the World on A String,", and "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive."

Band leaders: Guy Lombardo--a 2 x 3½ in. card and a 3 x 5 in piece of paper; Woody Herman, the back of his business card; Skitch Henderson, a 2 x 3½ in. card plus an unsigned business card; Artie Shaw, an Autograph Note Signed on the back of Harry Sparks' letter to him, saying he has no business cards and hopes this will do, 11/12/77; Andre Kostelanetz, his engraved personal card; Fred Waring, a 3 x 5 in. card; Peter Duchin, the back of his business card; Lawrence Welk, the inside of his business card; Doc Severinsen, a 2 x 3½ in. card; Edwin Franko Goldman, a Salvation Army program; and David Rose, a 3 x 5 in. card with a musical quotation inscribed "to Harry Sparks--with thanks." Also, Arthur Murray, a memo page and a card (also signed by Kathryn Murray). All fine.

Berlin, Irving (1888-1989) American composer and lyricist. One of the greatest songwriters ever, he wrote some 1250 songs. His hits include "Alexander's Ragtime Bank," "Easter Parade," "White Christmas," "Puttin' on the Ritz," and "God Bless America." Photograph Inscribed and Signed, "To Mr. Al Langford / Sincerely / Irving Berlin / 4/15/1915," 7 x 5 in. A wonderful, sepia-toned waist-length photo of a very young Berlin, who was only 27 years old when he signed this photo. Light soiling to margins and small paper loss at upper left corner, affecting nothing. This is the earliest photograph signed by Berlin that we have ever seen.

Bernstein, Leonard (1818-1990) American composer and conductor. New York Philharmonic program for February 15, 1959 at Carnegie Hall inscribed and signed, "For Elisabeth Gustafson Sincerely Leonard Bernstein," (New York), 9 x 6 in. Also signed by Managing Director Bruno Zirato, "Cordially Bruno Zirato," and soprano Nina Morgana Zirato, "To my lovely Elisabeth Gustafson from Nina Morgan Zirato," both of whom were associated with Caruso. Bruno Zirato was Caruso's secretary. Nina Morgana is said to have been the last soprano to sing with Caruso in recital. Bernstein was Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. Very fine.

Bernstein, Leonard (1918-1990) American conductor and composer. 11" x 8½" reproduction of an Al Hirschfeld caricature honoring Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess" Signed in black, felt-tip pen by Bernstein. The piece bears an 8¢ Gershwin postage stamp and a 1973 First Day of Issue cancellation.

Caruso, Enrico (1873-1921) World-famous Italian tenor. Caricature Inscribed and Signed, "To dear Buzzi-Peccia…Enrico Caruso New York 1906," and signed again at the lower edge with a huge signature, 5 x 3 in. Caruso cut out the back of a postcard and inlaid his sketch to make his own picture postcard. The caricature is of Caruso and Buzzi-Peccia, who was a gifted song composer and vocal teacher of Caruso's wife Dorothy, as well as of Alma Gluck and Speranza d'Alghieri. This caricature was presented to Speranza d'Alghieri, who was sometimes Caruso's Amneris when performing Aida at the Metropolitan Opera. D'Alghieri was the stage name of Gladys Meta Allers Mersfelder, daughter of Dr. Henry Allers and Florence Saltonstall Allers, and mother of Anita Mersfelder Burris-Meyer, from whose estate this caricature came.

[Caruso, Enrico] Caricatures by Enrico Caruso. Complete Collection Issued With the Approval of the Artist, New York: Published by Marziale Sisca, publisher of "La Follia di New York," 1922. First Edition. "Complements of E.M. Gatto is on two front end papers. A folio collection of approximately 100 pages of caricatures drawn by Caruso between 1903 and his death in 1921, followed by 14 pages of ads. He was known for drawing caricatures of himself and those he encountered during his operatic career. Covers are faux-grained, reddish-brown cloth over board, lettered in gilt; some fading and rubbing. Interior is lightly toned, else fine.

Luciano Pavarotti large signature in 2002 in lower border of a 8¼ x 5¾ in. color photo, plus a signed card; Joan Sutherland signed the front of her personal card; Leontyne Price signed a card with inscription and date; Beverly Sills signed a 5½ x 3½ in. photo of herself as Manon; Robert Merrill signed four cards, two on the front and two inside; Jerome Hines signed the back of his card and added book and chapter of a Bible verse; Dorothy Kirsten signed the back of her card; and Bidu Sayao signed an album page. Puccini, Giacomo (1858-1924) Italian composer; his most famous operas are La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot. Autograph Musical Quotation Signed on a 2 3/8 x 3 5/8 in. card. Three darkly penned bars, being the opening of Mimi's aria: "Mi chiamano Mimi" from La Bohème. Dated 1917. Very fine; old pasting remnants on verso. La Bohème debuted at the Teatro Regio in Turin on Feb. 1, 1896, with Arturo Toscanini conducting. It is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world.
