1782 Jewish Passport - Lyon, France. Passport for a Jewish man from Holland, Goudukau Meyer, and giving him the right to remain in Lyon for eight days to carry out his trade, dated May 10, 1782, Lyon, France, 1 page, 13¼ x 8½ in. The document certifies that Meyer is properly registered with the police, that they have seen his passports and are keeping them until his departure. This document was specially made for Jews. Printed "Juif" [Jew] at upper right and "Ville de Lyon. Police" at upper left. A physical description of the 26-year-old man is given, including the fact that his nose is "well made." Several notations are penned by French officials, showing that Meyer used the passport in Lyon more than once. [Dreyfus Affair]. Seven unused European postcards from the time of the Dreyfus Affair, c. 1898-1906. One is a photo of Dreyfus, identified as "Alfred o" Dreyfus; one shows a group of people saluting a figure of a blindfolded Justice ("Justitia"), with small busts below of Dreyfus, Labori (who served as lawyer for Dreyfus and Zola), Picquart (who discovered that Esterhazy was the real traitor and was himself prosecuted in a high-level cover-up attempt), Zola (who wrote the famous "J'accuse" letter which brought worldwide attention to the injustice being done), and Scheurer-Kestner (Vice President of the French Senate and the first politician to express doubt about Dreyfus' guilt). A German postcard is a "Memento of the Zola Trial" and pictures Labori, Dreyfus, Zola, and Esterhazy. A series of four German cards, titled "Affair Zola-Esterhazy / The concealed Lady!" show the treachery taking place; the "lady" is obviously wearing pants, boots and spurs, and a sword. About fine.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.

Dreyfus, Alfred. Autograph Note Signed "A Dreyfus," on Dreyfus' engraved visiting card, in French (Paris), January 13, 1910. On the twelfth anniversary of the publication of Emile Zola's famous "J'accuse" letter, Dreyfus writes to Zola's widow ((Alexandrine-Gabrielle Meley Zola) in affectionate memory of Zola: "I cannot, as always, let this date go by without sending you the echo of my eternally expressed tenderness for our much missed Zola and of my inalterable affection."

In 1894, Dreyfus, a Jewish French army officer, was wrongfully convicted of treason. The Dreyfus Affair became a cause célèbre when, on January 13, 1898, Zola published a letter to French President Félix Faure on the front page of the newspaper "L'Aurore," giving the actual facts of the case and charging a cover-up at the highest levels. The article electrified France and brought the attention of the world to the case, exposing the antisemitism and militarism which had perverted justice. Zola was himself tried and conviced of criminal libel (he escaped to England), but the letter was the impetus for Dreyfus' exoneration and reinstatement in the military in 1906.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
Obtained directly from Zola's family.

Dreyfus, Alfred. Autograph Letter Signed "A Dreyfus," 1 page, 6 x 4¼ in., in French (Paris), Thursday, n.d. Dreyfus write to the widow of Emile Zola saying he is sorry that the ceremony for Sunday has been set back to April 12. Dreyfus and his family had delayed their departure for Italy until April 5, precisely to be able to be at her side, but they can't wait any longer…they have to be back when classes start again. They are going to Rome and Naples, looking for a little rest and sun, but she should be assured that in their thoughts and hearts they will be with her on April 12. They are sending her an affectionate memento. Fine. The date "1908" is penciled above the salulation. Emile Zola was born April 2, 1840, so this letter is almost certainly regarding a celebration of his birthday. He died in 1902, before Dreyfus was exonerated from the charge of treason which Zola had brought to the attention of the world. Dreyfus felt eternal gratitude to Zola and remained close to his widow.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.
Obtained directly from Zola's family.

Rabbis - Group of Six French Letters, 1879-1900. Six Autograph Letters Signed, five of them by Chief Rabbis. Lazare Isidor, who wrote one letter dated 1879, and Zado Kahn, who wrote three letters dated 1888, 1893, and 1900 were Chief Rabbis of the Central Consistory of French Israelites in Paris. A. Lévy, who wrote one letter dated 1889, was the Chief Rabbi of Lyon. The sixth letter (to the French publisher Hachette) was written in 1896 by Isidore Cahen, who was an author, journalist and director of the French Jewish review, Archives Israélites. In one letter, Zado Kahn thanks the Dean of the Faculty of Protestant Theology for a copy of "the brilliant lesson on 'the moral ideal' which I had the good fortune of hearing." Another, to the Director of Public Assistance discusses a meeting of the Committee of Israelite Charity and mentions that Baron Edmond de Rothschild is the chairman of the committee. Interesting content, in French and untranslated. Some toning and soiling; first page of one letter is torn, missing some text. Consistories were created by Napoleon I in 1808 to administer Jewish religious matters and facilitate the acculturation of French Jews. Each French "département" (French administrative district) had a consistory which was usually composed of two rabbis and three lay people.
