Popular type. Nice golden toning. Interesting reverse die break horizontally from rim to rim through the tops of CAL. The Washington Heads have been popular with collectors since the beginning. Fortunately, there are enough of them surfacing every year to supply the eager buyers. This near-gem should please just about anyone with its lively detail, big 1872 date, and balanced composition. Pop 35; 57 finer (PCGS # 10549) .

The plate coin for the second edition of Breen-Gillio. Although dated 1872, we know from die evidence that this was actually struck in 1873. Called "Aged Head" in the 1935 sale of the Comstock collection, although there is really no noticeable difference between this and the other Frontier Liberty heads. The plate coin for the second edition of Breen-Gillio. A light, horizontal crack runs across the bottom of the reverse, indicating a late (possibly terminal) state of the dies.
