Persia, Achaemenid Empire. AV Daric (8.4g). Time of Artaxerxes I - Darius III, c. 450-330 BC. Persian king in kneeling-running position right, holding dagger and bow. Reverse: Incused punch.

This is the only coin type mentioned in the Old Testament; Ezra 2:68-69 indicates that "some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the Lord which is at Jerusalem, offered freely for the house of God … three score and one thousand drams (e.g. darics)." . Choice Very Fine.

Cilicia, Tarsos. Mazaios, 361-334 BC. AR Stater (10.7 g). Baal of Tarsos enthroned left, holding eagle and lotus-tipped scepter. Reverse: Fortifications surmounted by lion attacking kneeling bull. SNG Levante 115. Lightly toned. NGC graded Choice AU Star: Strike 5/5; Surface 4/5 . Our grade is Superb Extremely Fine with wonderful detail.

Hendin has suggested that the city walls of Jerusalem may be portrayed on this Tarsian stater of the Satrap Mazaios.

Syria, Seleucid Kingdom, Antiochus IV Epiphanes, 175-164 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.5g). Diademed bust right. Reverse: Zeus seated left, holding Nike on right hand and resting left on sceptre, with Greek inscription "Of King Antiochos, God Made Manifest." High relief portrait in fine style and nicely toned

In 170 BC, Antiochos plundered the Treasury of the Temple of Jerusalem and carried away golden holy artifacts. Two years later, he issued a decree forbidding all Jewish religious practices under penalty of death. The Jews revolted under the leadership of the Maccabees, and later celebrated their victory with the holiday of Hannukah. Choice Very Fine.

Phoenicia, Tyre, 89-88 BC. AR Shekel (14.24 g) dated year 38. Laureate head right of Melqart. Reverse: Eagle standing left; year above club in left field. BMC 130. Nice large flan. Superb Extremely Fine.

This is the coin type that was accepted as payment for the yearly Temple tax, as well as being the type of the 30 shekels paid to Judas Iscariot.

Phoenicia, Tyre. 78/7 B.C.E. AR Shekel (14.4g). Infamous "30 Pieces of Silver" type. Laureate head of Melqart to right. Reverse: Eagle standing left, with right foot on prow of ship, palm branch over right shoulder, club and date HM = 48 on left; surrounded by inscription TYPOY IEPAΣ KAIAΣYΛOY (of Tyre the Holy and Inviolable). This is the most likely candidate for the infamous "30 Pieces of Silver." Very well centered, sharply struck in high relief, virtually as made. H-917. Superb Extremely Fine.
