Lot 655
1793 C-2 R3 PCGS slabbed "Genuine". Sharpness F12 or slightly better but lightly corroded. No verdigris, and the only marks are a few faint hairline scratches well hidden in the natural patina. Dark olive with lighter chocolate brown devices. The date is clear and the legends are complete. The two-tone patina accents the details and enhances the eye appeal in spite of the roughness. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is net G6.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.

Lot 656
1794 C-4a R3. Good-5. Small Edge Letters. Glossy chocolate and steel. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are some dull, shallow scratches hidden in the toning on both sides. Otherwise this piece would rate a slightly higher grade. The date is bold and the legends are clear except for weakness at RICA. LDS, Manley state 4.0, with strong swelling covering the field under the cap. Nice eye appeal for the grade in spite of the light marks.
Estimated Value $200 - 300.

1795 C-4 R3. About Good-3. Several points sharper, especially on the obverse, but the planchet is covered with fine to moderate granularity mixed with myriad light hairline scratches. The date is strong and the legends are clear except for RICA, STATES, and HALF CENT, which are faint or gone. Slightly glossy dark olive with lighter brown toning covering the devices.

1795 C-5b R4. About Good-3. Thick Planchet. Several points sharper but the surfaces are granular, mostly in the fields and protected areas. The surfaces have been lightly smoothed and the edge was carefully rolled creating a high rim around both sides. The date is quite faint, essentially gone, while the legends are readable. Slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker olive toning in protected areas. Weight 111.0 grains.
Estimated Value $100 - 150.

1795 C-6a R2. Good-4. Without Pole. Thin Planchet. A couple points sharper but there is a dull punchmark in the center of the obverse that created a bulge on the reverse that obliterates CEN in CENT. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth with only a few rim nicks and light rim bruises. Nice glossy chocolate brown. The date is complete and easily readable and the legends are strong except for CEN.
Estimated Value $125 - 175.

1796 C-2 R4. VG-7. Sharpness F12 or slightly better with fine roughness around the date. No verdigris and only a few minor contact marks, including a rim bruise at the top of the cap and a couple more at UNITED. Glossy chocolate brown. The date is clear, although roughness does weaken the bottoms of the 7 & 9, and the legends are clear except for weakness at UNI. Not perfect but still a rather decent example for the grade. Weight 78.2 grains.

1797 C-3b R4. About Good-3. Lettered Edge. Slightly sharper but there is an old but strong scratch from the bottom of the L in LIBERTY down to the chin and two small punchmarks over EN in CENT. The planchet shows very fine roughness in the fields and protected areas while the highpoints are nearly smooth. Slightly glossy olive brown, light on the devices and darker in protected areas. The date is complete and easily readable. The legends are readable except for weakness at STATES OF AM and HALF, which are faint at best. The edge lettering is complete and strong.

1804 C-6 R2. AGS graded EF-45. Spiked Chin. Glossy medium brown and chocolate. Smooth, nearly choice surfaces except for a collection of tiny nicks inside the wreath plus a larger dull nick between the top leaves of the wreath. Very rare LDS, Manley state 10.5, Braig 7.5, with a large dimple void in the cud forming over the left side of the M in AMERICA. The Spiked Chin feature is clear. A very nice example of this very rare intermediate die state, clearly superior to the Ray Rouse example sold in our 9/08 sale (lot #162). Our grade is EF40 net VF35 for the reverse nicks.
Estimated Value $600 - 1,000.

1805 C-4 R2-. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Large 5 with Stems. Lustrous olive and steel brown with underlying frosty lighter steel brown in protected areas. Faint hints of very faded mint color are bleeding through as well, and the eye appeal is excellent. The only mark of any consequence is a small splash of silvery toning on the cheek, and this appears to be a bit of impurity imbedded in the planchet. Sharply struck MDS, Manley state 2.0 early. The die crack through the bust tip is present but faint. Our grade is MS60. PCGS population 2 with 2 finer.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Lot 665
1806 C-1 R1. VF-35. Stemless Wreath. Sharpness near AU50 but the toning is uneven because the upper right part of the obverse and lower right part of the reverse were lightly cleaned and retoned dark steel and olive while the remainder of the planchet is an attractive frosty medium brown. The contrast in the toning adversely affects the eye appeal of an otherwise nice half cent. MDS with the reverse rotated 15 degrees CW.
Estimated Value $100 - 150.

1807 C-1 R1. Fine-12. A couple points sharper, especially on the reverse, but there are some faint hairline scratches hidden in the natural patina on both sides, strongest inside the wreath. Glossy dark olive with chocolate toning on the highpoints. Very late die state, Manley state 3.0 late. The dies are heavily worn and the tops of UNITED STATES are nearly gone.
Estimated Value $40 - 60.

Lot 668
1829 C-1 R1. VG-10. Flipover Double Struck over Off-Center Obverse Brockage. Slightly glossy steel brown and light olive with slightly lighter toning on the highpoints thanks to an old cleaning. The surfaces are decent but do show traces of extremely fine granularity in protected areas. The notable marks are a rim nick over star 7 and another below the bust tip. This piece would be relatively insignificant as a generic example of a common date, but that's not the case thanks to multiple mint errors that occurred during the strike(s). This piece was struck at least twice, possibly three times. The final strike is normal, but clear undertype of earlier strikes remains on both sides. Evidence of an 80% off center obverse brockage is obvious at stars 9-13. On the reverse there is also clear undertype of a 15-20% off center impression of a normal obverse. The 18 and upper half of the 2 of the date is located over OF and a trail of dentils fades out as it extends through AME. Obviously the undertype on the obverse and reverse do not line up, so it would appear there were more than two strikes involved. Regardless, it's clear that things got really jammed up in the press when this piece was struck. A great multiple mint error.
Estimated Value $250 - 400.

1831 First Restrike Breen 1-B Rarity-6-. PCGS graded Proof 67 Brown. Variety with the Reverse of 1836. Bluish steel and light olive mixed with medium chocolate brown. Traces of faced mint color show through in a couple of the protected areas on the obverse. The surfaces are nearly flawless but are rather dull from a thin layer of natural oxidation. The only notable marks are a brownish spot on the right side of the N in UNITED and another on the upper left seriph of that same letter. The fields are nicely reflective under the thin veneer of oxidation. Our grade is Proof-63. PCGS population 1 with none finer.
Estimated Value $30,000-UP.

1841 Proof Original Breen 1-A R6. NGC graded Proof 66 Brown. Very attractive chocolate brown with traces of original mint red in protected areas on the reverse and bluish steel overtones covering the fields on both sides. The fields and highly reflective and offer outstanding eye appeal. The only marks are a collection of tiny golden flakes in the planchet near the dentils right of the date with additional similar golden planchet flakes over the H in HALF and at the dentils on either side of OF (all as struck). Sharply struck Breen state III, the usual die state with a very fine die crack passing through stars 3-6 to the dentils at stars 2 & 7. A beautiful original proof strike (although the NGC slab label incorrectly indicates this piece is a "Restrike"). Our grade is Proof-64+, close to Proof-65 gem.
