1791 Washington Large Eagle Cent Uniface Reverse with Shrewsbury Edge Breen-1215. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Glossy light chocolate and medium brown. The fields are reflective and void of any marks or other distractions. Struck very slightly off center to K-10 but only the dentils are affected. According to Walter Breen, the uniface strikes were made to test the reverse die. He knew of only 2 examples. One of those was in the Garrett collection (Bowers & Ruddy 3/25/81:1702) where it was called unique. That example was slightly inferior to the piece offered here. A beautiful piece offering a very important opportunity for the advanced collector. The edge lettering is complete and easily readable. Weight 168.2 grains. Pop 1; Only 1 graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 404719) .
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

Lot 652
1792 Pattern Washington Cent by Peter Getz Plain Edge Baker-25 Breen-1352. PCGS graded EF-40. Glossy dark chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and attractive, but there are a few minor marks. These include a pair of dull rim nicks under the date, a couple more minor rim nicks elsewhere on both sides, and a thin planchet fissure at ST in STATES (as struck). Well struck very slightly off center to the top, but the legends remain comfortably on the planchet. A premium example of this very rare pattern cent. These pieces were designed and engraved by Peter Getz and were struck in the coach house of John Harper (a saw maker and mechanical expert of the day who had experience forging and hardening coinage dies) located on 6th street in Philadelphia. These pieces were struck as patterns for a Federal coinage, but President Washington rejected the designs because he did not want his likeness on our coins. In spite of the rejection, these Getz patterns are especially important in our numismatic history because they were the only contemporary Washington coins struck in the United States. Described on page 78 of the "Redbook" and priced therein at $60,000 in EF.
Estimated Value $35,000 - 45,000.
