Lot 582
1797 S-120a R3. PCGS graded AU-58. Reverse of 1796 with Plain Edge. Lustrous light to medium steel brown with a couple tiny wisps of darker olive brown on the lower part of the reverse. There is a very light touch of wear on the highpoints of the obverse but the reverse appears very close to mint state. The only marks are a faint swipe of darker toning in the field left of the hair ribbon and a collection of microscopic pinpricks in the field above the bust tip. The dentils left of the date are softly struck, as are the opposing ones over the second T in STATES (all thanks to a minor thinness in the planchet at that spot). MDS, Breen state III. Called AU50 by Denis Loring and tied for CC#2. Bland says EF40 and tied for CC#5. A very attractive and important example of this popular "Redbook" type either way. Our grade is EF45. The attribution and Wells provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.

1808 S-279 R1. AU-50 Plus. Turban Head. Very attractive frosty steel brown and chocolate with generous amounts of lustrous tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. No roughness or verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks, including a couple tiny nicks high on the neck at the jawline and another just right of star 7. Just a bit of very light wear on the highest points. Great eye appeal, very close to AU55. MDS, Breen state II late.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

1809 S-280 R2. NGC graded AU-53. Turban Head. Frosty steel brown with slightly darker steel brown and chocolate toning on the highpoints. There are hints of very faded mint color showing through in protected areas around the wreath. No roughness or verdigris and only a couple barely visible contact marks, including a tiny nick in the dentils right of star 13 and another off the tip of the wreath ribbon. A strong glass reveals some extremely faint hairlines around the date and at the top and bottom of the reverse. Well struck E-MDS, Breen state V. The repunching on the 9 is clear. Previously removed from a PCGS slab graded AU58 (PCGS label included). Excellent eye appeal and a great example of an 1809 cent. Our grade is EF45. The attribution and March Wells provenance are noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.

1810/09 S-281 R1. EF-45. Turban Head. Overdate 10 over 09. Frosty olive and dark steel brown. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. Looks AU50 but a glass reveals a few thin, short parallel scratches hidden in the hair. These marks are easily missed and are not distracting at all. The only other marks are a light scratch near the dentils at stars 3-4 and a couple thin, light nicks at the bust tip, plus a tiny planchet flake at the left side of star 2. The surfaces are satiny and the planchet quality is outstanding. E-MDS, Breen state III. The overdate is bold. Struck very slightly off center to K-5.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

Lot 624
1810 S-283 R2. VF-20. Turban Head. Sharper by at least 5 points but the obverse stars and parts of the hair have been expertly strengthened leaving full radial lines in all the stars. The obverse has retoned a most beautiful shade of chocolate delicately mixed with medium brown while the reverse appears to be totally original and is glossy chocolate with frosty steel brown toning in protected areas. No roughness, verdigris, or notable signs of contact. The eye appeal is outstanding for the grade, and the strengthening is barely detectable. In fact, the strengthening could easily go undetected except for the fact that finding full radial lines in all the stars is so unusual (perhaps unprecedented) for this die variety. And that makes you look more closely than you might otherwise. EDS, Breen state I. This is the coin substituted into the ANS collection for the Clapp coin (supposedly switched without permission by Dr. Sheldon). When March Wells discovered he had the original Clapp coin in his collection (ex Dr. Sheldon-R. E. Naftzger, Jr.-Herman Halpern, Stack’s 3/16/88:270), he notified the ANS. Eric Newman, representing the ANS, accepted the Clapp coin back into the ANS collection and gave this switched coin to March Wells in 5/03. So this cent comes with a great look, a "colorful" history, and good title following a checkered past.
Estimated Value $500 - 800.

1810 S-284 R3 EF. EF-45 Plus. Turban Head. Choice frosty chocolate and steel brown with lustrous golden tan toning faded down from mint color in some of the protected areas. The protected areas are covered with satiny mint luster and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. Very close to AU50 and choice in every respect. The best identifying mark on this cent is a microscopic pinprick between the lower right points of star 3. MDS, Breen state II. Struck very slightly off center to K-5. 1810 S-284 R3. VG-8. Turban Head. Obverse Brockage. Rather glossy chocolate brown with darker steel brown and olive toning in protected areas. The obverse surfaces are decent but do show uniform extremely fine granularity in the fields and protected areas. The reverse, however, is smooth. No verdigris and only a few contact marks, including a dull dent or depression in the hair under ER in LIBERTY and a few dull, light rim nicks on both sides. An obverse brockage impression. The planchet was inserted normally but the previously struck cent was not ejected from the press. The obverse of the new planchet was then struck normally while the reverse was impressed into the obverse of the cent that was stuck in the press, thereby leaving an incuse impression of the obverse on the "reverse" side of the new planchet. The normal and incuse impressions are not rotated (they line up perfectly), and the incuse impression is strong. A neat mint error.
Estimated Value $600 - 800.

1810 S-285 R2. EF-40. Turban Head. Fine Double Profile. Frosty olive brown and chocolate delicately mixed with subtle tones of reddish chocolate. The surfaces are covered with fine flowline luster leaving an attractive satiny appearance. There are a few barely visible specks of greenish and dark olive brown verdigris hidden in protected areas on both sides, including a tiny one between the 8 and second 1 in the date, but the surfaces are smooth. The only contact marks are a few light nicks along the bottom edge of the bust. M-LDS, Breen state III. There is a fine double profile on the tip of the nose, upper lip, chin, and neck (caused by die bounce). The obverse is very slightly misaligned to K-11 while the reverse is properly centered on the planchet. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU55BN (NGC label included).
