1796 S-92 R3. VF-30. Draped Bust. Double Profile. Slightly sharper but there are traces of microscopic carbon or fine verdigris dusted into some of the protected areas around the portrait, mostly at the bust tip, plus a small spot of shallow carbon in the field before the forehead. Glossy steel brown and light chocolate with darker olive brown toning in protected areas. The only mark of any consequence is a small, very shallow planchet void near the rim left of the L in LIBERTY, as struck. MDS, Breen state III, with a wide, clear double profile on the nose and forehead. Estimated Value $3,000-UP. Ex Doug Bird 4/23/93. View details and enlarged photos

1796 S-98 R4. VF-35. Draped Bust. Sharper by at least 5 points but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy light to medium chocolate brown. No roughness, verdigris, or contact marks. The only defects are some of the usual microscopic planchet chips scattered over the planchet, including a very thin horizontal one in the field left of the lower end of the hair ribbon and another on the upper left part of the F in OF, all as struck. Great eye appeal. MDS, Breen state II. Called EF45 net VF25 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #32076. Bland says EF40 net VF25 and CC#4 among the confirmed examples. Both assessments were made before the cent was properly retoned. The finest known example is impounded in the ANS Museum, so the pool of better examples is quite limited. Estimated Value $5,000-UP. Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. #458, 2/1945:96 (as Uncirculated)-Abe Kosoff (Numismatic Gallery)-unknown-Louisville Numismatic Exchange 5/90. View details and enlarged photos

1796 S-103 R4+. VG-10. Draped Bust. LIHERTY Obverse. The obverse is very slightly weaker while the reverse is a bit stronger. Glossy light chocolate brown with darker olive brown toning in protected areas. The two-tone appearance accents the details and creates excellent eye appeal. No corrosion or verdigris, and the only notable mark is a small planchet chip on the lower part of the C in CENT. EDS, Breen state I. The obverse is slightly misaligned to the bottom causing the date to be weaker near the rim, but the LIHERTY feature is bold and the reverse legends are strong. Called VG10 net VG8 in the Noyes census, his photo #29189. Estimated Value $800 - 1,000. Ex John M. Foreman, Sr., Stack’s 1/13/93:1116. View details and enlarged photos

1796 S-104 R3. VF-25. Draped Bust. LIHERTY Obverse. Sharpness VF35 but a bit dark with traces of extremely faint roughness under the slightly glossy patina. The roughness is strongest in the field before the face, but it is faint even there. No verdigris, and the only mark is a trivial rim nick at ER in LIHERTY. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel. The date and legends are strong and the LIHERTY feature is bold. M-LDS, Breen state II late with obvious die rust showing in some of the fields. Called VF35 net VF25 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VF20 and tied for CC#6, his photo #29090. Either way this is a sharp condition census example of a popular "Redbook" variety. Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000. Ex John M. Foreman, Sr., 1989-Stack’s 1/93:1117-John Whitney, Stack’s 5/4/99:1739-McCawley & Grellman Auctions 2001 EAC Sale, lot 191. View details and enlarged photos
