1794 S-49 R2. VF-20. Glossy light olive and chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are numerous light nicks scattered over both sides. Otherwise this piece would be close to VF25. The notable marks are a tiny planchet fissure (as struck) between the A & M in AMERICA and a dull rim nick over that A. LDS. The obverse die crack is strong and a dull wave in the field slants up from the end of the nose. The reverse is slightly misaligned to the upper right causing weakness at S-OF-AM while everything else is clear.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

1794 S-51 R5-. Fine-12. Sharpness VF25 but there is a dull vertical dent down between the B & E in LIBERTY and a patch of pitting surrounding the T in CENT. The remainder of the planchet is relatively smooth, but a glass reveals traces of very fine roughness elsewhere in the fields and protected areas. Specks of emerald-green verdigris can be found in some of the pitmarks on the reverse. A few old hairline scratches on the lower left of the obverse round out the notable defects. The good news is that the eye appeal is decent in spite of the obvious defects. Mostly glossy olive and chocolate brown with lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. The date and legends are complete and strong. EDS, Breen state I, before any obverse die cracks.

1794 S-52 R6-. Good-6. The obverse is a bit better than the reverse, as usual for worn examples of this variety. The overall sharpness is better than G6 but the planchet is covered with very fine granularity that's partially hidden under a slightly glossy chocolate and darker olive brown patina. No verdigris, only a few rim bruises around the obverse and a dull rim nick at TE in UNITED. The date is complete and clear and the legends are full except for weakness at TES-OF. EDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die cracked. A decent example of this rare variety in spite of the imperfect surfaces.

1794 S-56 R3. VF-25. The so-called "Office Boy Reverse" variety due to the irregular placement of the letters and devices on that side. Glossy chocolate brown with darker olive toning on the reverse highpoints. The hair details suggest a slightly higher grade, but the fields show many tiny pre-striking planchet chips, strongest on the upper part of the obverse and the lower left of the reverse at UNI and the fraction. The area at UNI is weakly struck, which accounts for the abnormal amount of planchet chips in that area since the dies were not pressed together with enough pressure to squeeze out the tiny planchet imperfections. No corrosion, verdigris, or notable contact marks. EDS, Breen state I.

1794 S-57 R1. VF-30 Plus. Slightly sharper, especially the hair details, but the planchet displays numerous tiny planchet chips, mostly at the top of the cap and LIBE, at S-OF, and around UNI. All these chips were present on the planchet before striking, but the pressure of the strike was not sufficient to squeeze all these marks out of the final product. This variety (along with several others) is notorious for these tiny planchet flaws. Otherwise the surfaces are quite nice, void of corrosion or verdigris and displaying only a few minor contact marks. A thin nick on the jaw over the throat, a diagonal nick in the field before the neck, and a dull mark slanting through the O in ONE are the notable defects. Glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas on both sides. EDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die flaws.

No hint of roughness or verdigris, only a couple microscopic contact marks from flawless. A tiny vertical hairline scratch between the tops of the E & S in STATES is the best identifying mark, but you can't see it without a good glass. EDS, Breen state III, before any swelling in the field before the portrait. The die clashmarks are clear on both sides. A choice example in every respect.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

1795 S-76b R1. PCGS graded VF-35. Plain Edge. Flipover Triple Strike. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with both tones delicately woodgrained on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth, free of any trace of corrosion or verdigris. No notable contact marks on either side. This cent was struck at least 3 times (even though the PCGS label says "Flipover Double Struck"). The first two strikes were nearly centered on the planchet but were offset by a 5-10 degree rotation between those impressions. This is clearly visible at AMER where the obverse cap is boldly doubled with a 1-2 millimeter separation between those impressions. The double struck planchet was then flipped over and struck once more slightly off center to K-10 but with all the designs still on the planchet. Ample evidence of the undertype first two strikes is visible on the right half of both sides. A choice example of a spectacular mint error. Our grade is VF20 choice. The attribution, flipover double struck, and March Wells provenance are all noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

1795 S-77 R3. VG-8. Plain Edge. Flipover Double Strike. Very attractive glossy chocolate and light olive brown with traces of slightly lighter brown toning on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and void of any roughness or other defects, a choice example for the grade. Double struck with the planchet flipped over between the impressions. The upper half of the head and cap plus BE in LIBERTY from the first strike show clearly as undertype on the upper left of the reverse, but there is no trace of undertype visible on the obverse. This suggests the initial strike may have been uniface (against a blank planchet on the reverse side rather than against the reverse die). The second strike is also slightly off center to K-9. This is a choice example of a very impressive mint error. This cent is plated in the Breen book on the cents of 1793-1814 to illustrate the flipover double strike type of mint error (page 253). Removed from an ANACS slab graded VG8 (ANACS label included, and it notes the attribution and Flipover Double Struck feature).
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.

1795 S-78 R1. EF-40 Plus. Plain Edge. Sharpness AU50 but there are numerous tiny planchet chips in the fields before the behind the portrait, as struck. Plain edge 1795 cents almost always display some of these natural planchet flaws, but there are too many on this example to ignore. No corrosion or verdigris and only a few trivial marks, including a shallow pitmark between the feet of the F & A and a microscopic hairline scratch on the M in AMERICA. Glossy chocolate and olive with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty lighter brown toning in the protected areas on both sides. Close to EF45. E-MDS, Breen state II. There are clear die clashmarks on both sides but the tiny chip on the lower edge of the jaw has not formed.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.

No verdigris, but there are numerous faint hairline scratches on the obverse, none visible without the aid of a glass. Recolored a slightly glossy reddish chocolate and steel with traces of light brown in a couple of the protected areas. Extensive additional undertype from the first strike is clearly visible on both sides. E-MDS, Breen state II. Another outstanding mint error from the March Wells collection.

1796 S-81 R3. PCGS graded AU-55. Liberty Cap. Choice glossy chocolate brown with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty lighter brown covering the protected areas. A beautiful, flawless Liberty Cap cent with perfectly smooth surfaces. Just the barest hint of rub on the highest points of the design from mint state. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state I. ONE CENT is fully impressed, which is quite unusual for the variety. A premium cent in every respect with eye appeal surpassing that found on many mint state early cents. Called EF45 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #23972. Bland also says EF45 but calls it tied for CC#6. Our grade is a very choice EF45+, close to AU50.
