Nicely struck E-MDS with full radial lines in all the stars. Excellent eye appeal. Called MS61 and tied for CC#8 in one place in the Noyes census, MS63 and tied for CC#4 in another, his photo #27535. 1839 N-5 R2 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Booby Head. Choice, highly lustrous medium chocolate and steel brown with very faded underlying mint color showing through in the obverse fields. Great eye appeal. The surfaces are satiny and nearly perfect. The only marks, and they are trivial, are microscopic planchet flakes around the date (as struck), a light diagonal nick left of star 7, and faint traces of an old fingerprint at RIC in AMERICA. Nicely struck MDS with fine radial die flowlines covering the fields and full radial lines in all the stars. Called MS63 and tied for CC#4 in one place in the Noyes census, MS65 and tied for CC#2 in another, his photo #20712. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#6. Our grade is MS65. 1839 N-6 R2 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Booby Head. The obverse is lustrous chocolate with bluish steel overtones while the reverse is a lighter shade of frosty chocolate brown and steel brown. A small splash of darker steel toning over the junction of the N & E in ONE is the only obvious mark, but there is a tiny spot of carbon in the field over the hair bun and a small planchet chip in the dentils (as struck) under star 1. The fields are satiny and offer excellent eye appeal. Nicely struck MDS with a fine die crack through the D in UNITED to the wreath where it meanders around clockwise until it exits into the bottom of the U in UNITED. Called MS61 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21870. Bland says MS60+ and CC#3. Our grade is MS63. PCGS Population 1; none finer.

Great luster and eye appeal. The only marks of any significance are a planchet flake in the dentils under star 13, as struck, and traces of an old fingerprint in the field before the face. MDS. All the obverse die cracks described by Wright are present and clear, but the reverse die clashmarks found in the late state are not present. Nicely struck with full radial lines in all the stars. Frosty golden brown and light chocolate with delicate overtones of sea green on both sides and peeps of mint color in the protected areas on both sides. No spots, stains, or contact marks, but there are many microscopic planchet flakes in the dentils on both sides and a faint planchet lamination at the dentils just right of the D in UNITED. LDS. The reverse die is weaker from wear and lapping and clear die clashmarks show inside the wreath, including an impression of the inner ear over the N in CENT. 1839 N-8 R1 PCGS graded MS66RB. PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown. Head of 1840. Bright original mint red fading to light steel brown on the highpoints, at least 80% of the original mint color remaining, especially on the obverse where the mint color is barely affected. The only marks are a trail of microscopic ticks from tight below the bust tip to above star 1 and a shallow nick at the dentils under the tip of the wreath ribbon, plus a speck of dark toning right of star 13. Sharply struck E-MDS. The fields are covered with satiny mint frost thanks to microscopic die flowlines but the details are sharp and all the stars have full radial lines. The pantograph lines (raised die lines in a circular design with the ear hole at the center) on the cheek and neck are clear. Fabulous eye appeal, a wonderful example of the "Head of 1840" version of the 1839 cent. Called MS70- and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Choice highly lustrous bluish steel and light chocolate brown faded down from mint color with mellowed mint red bleeding through in the fields and protected areas. Ample mint color remains to suggest this one might deserve a Red & Brown designation. Nearly flawless in every respect. The only marks are a bit of darker bluish steel toning well hidden in the small depression right of the Y in LIBERTY, a tiny nick in the center of the cheek, a short swipe of chocolate toning between the C & A in AMERICA, and a tiny planchet chip (as struck) near the dentils left of the first S in STATES. Sharply struck E-MDS. A wonderful example of the 1839 Head of 1840 type. Called MS65 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census behind only the preceding example, his photo #21907. Our grade is MS65. Lustrous bright original mint red mellowing to light steel on the highpoints, and there are delicate tiny splashes of similar steel toning on both sides. A pair of small splashes of this darker toning are located under the E in ONE, and these offer good identifying marks. MDS with fine flowlines covering the fields on both sides. The legend outside the wreath is starting to weaken thanks to die wear. Called MS70- and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#4. Our grade is MS65. 1839 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Silly Head. Choice highly lustrous bluish steel brown and light chocolate with lighter steel brown faded down from mint color in the fields and protected areas. The surfaces are satiny and essentially flawless. A very thin diagonal nick in the field under star 8 is the best identifying mark. Very sharp EDS, the earliest seen. The always-present die crack through the portrait extends weakly from the base of the L down to the lowest curl but does not reach into the fields beyond the portrait at either end. In addition there is a strong, clear top of a stray 8 punched into the dentils under the normal 8, and it touches the left base of that digit. In addition, just off the dentil tips around the reverse legend are several sharp, clear circular die lines (like pantograph lines). A great early die state for a variety that usually comes from worn dies. Called MS63 choice in the Noyes census, his photo #20817. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#3 as well. Our grade is MS65. 1839 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Silly Head. Gorgeous and highly lustrous bluish steel and light olive with slightly faded mint color covering the protected areas on both sides. Satiny and flawless, a true gem cent. Finding an identifying mark presents quite a challenge; a very tiny tick on the coronet between the L & I in LIBERTY will have to suffice. Nicely struck E-MDS. The die crack through the portrait now extends to the dentils left of star 6 and to the dentils in two places right of the date, but these extensions are faint. The top of the stray 8 is still visible at the left bottom of the normal 8, but it is dull and fading quickly, and the lines at the reverse dentils found on the preceding example are all gone. Lustrous bright mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints, 85% of the original color remaining on the obverse, 95% on the reverse. The only defects are traces of an old fingerprint on the left half of the obverse and under CE in CENT. Great eye appeal in spite of the fingerprints as the mint color just jumps off the coin. MDS. The die cracks are a bit stronger and the fields are covered with fine radial die flowlines that contribute to the attractive cartwheel luster. Called MS70- and CC#1 in the Bland census. However, under magnification you can find a hairline scratch along the lower edge of the jaw, another down the front edge of the neck, and a third along the lower edge of the bust over the date. M-LDS with the obverse die cracks well advanced. The parallel diagonal die lines up to the left from star 7 are very dull but remain visible. Brazil 80 Reis overstruck on an 1820/19 Newcomb-1 Large Cent. Glossy chocolate brown. The Brazil dies were used to produce the larger 80 Reis pieces in 1823-1831, and the peripheral legends are off the cent planchet. There is enough of the cent undertype visible, including the date, to attribute it to the 1820/19 Newcomb-1 overdate variety (not that it really matters). Why this was done is a mystery, but I suspect a mint worker in Brazil had a bit too much time on his hands and a US Large Cent in his pocket, and we see the product of his whimsy. Regardless, this piece makes a fitting end to the sale of the superb middle date cent collection of Mr. R. E. Naftzger, Jr., and this sale will quickly become an important piece of numismatic history. PCGS Population 1; 1 finer in 53.
