Lot 350
1836 N-2 R2 PCGS graded MS64BN. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Lustrous light olive and chocolate brown with darker olive toning in the most-protected areas of the obverse. The surfaces are satiny and nearly void of marks, although there are a few specks of carbon around the C in AMERICA. However, there are traces of lacquer or some similar coating on the obverse plus a small splash of the same stuff at the bottom of the reverse. I assume this stuff is removable and that the eye appeal would improve if the removal was accomplished, but you can't be sure without trying. LDS. The die crack through the second S in STATES is clear and the dies show lower relief thanks to lapping to remove roughness. Called MS60 and tied for CC#8 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and tied for CC#14, his photo #27175. Our grade is MS60. PCGS Population 3; 1 finer in 65BN.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

1836 N-3 R1 PCGS graded MS66RB. PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel and light olive, about half the original color remaining, mostly on the obverse. Essentially perfect save for a few microscopic specks of toning scattered over both sides. The notable spots are nestled between the upper left points of star 3, close below star 9 (actually a tiny planchet flake), and under the first S in STATES. Sharply struck EDS with hard, slightly reflective fields that offer outstanding eye appeal. The fine die polishing lines are clearly visible under the stem tip to CA and through the M in AMERICA to the berry below. Called MS65 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20641. Bland says MS65+ and tied for CC#2. Our grade is MS66. PCGS Population 1; none finer.

Very attractive and highly lustrous bluish steel and light olive with faded mint red in protected areas on the obverse and sea green overtones on the reverse. MDS with the die marks under the berry below the E in UNITED lapped off the die. Sharply struck and the eye appeal is excellent, but the proof status of this piece is a subject of some debate. Breen lists it as coin #1 of only 2 known to him (page 65, Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins 1722-1977). Del Bland lists this one as Proof-60+ and one of 2 known to him while Denis Loring says this example is the only true proof of the variety calling it Proof-60+ (he says the other example claimed to be a proof, Pearl:340, is not a true proof). Our opinion is that this is a beautiful cent struck from freshly polished dies that produced prooflike fields, but it is not a true proof strike. Not in dispute is the outstanding eye appeal of this sharply struck cent. Noyes photo #36378. Our grade is MS64 Prooflike. PCGS Population 2; none finer.

1837 N-9 R1 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Beaded Hair Cord, Head of 1838. Highly lustrous light chocolate and bluish steel brown with faded mint color showing in the protected areas on both sides. Flawless except for very faint traces of an old fingerprint in the field before the portrait. LDS with rim cud breaks from star 11 down to the bottom of star 13. In addition, there is a curious collection of die scratches at the dentils from star 3 to star 4 with a much smaller patch of similar marks left of star 2 and at the dentil tips over AM. At first glance you would swear these were scratches added after minting, but all the latest state examples show the same marks, so they have to be in the die. All the die cracks previously described are stronger and there is an additional horizontal crack passing through the lump on the bust. These dies are really cracked up.
