Lot 250
1831 N-3 R1 PCGS graded MS66BN. PCGS graded MS-66 Brown. Small Letters Reverse. Choice lustrous bluish steel and light chocolate brown with mint red showing in protected areas of the obverse and original mint color remaining on about 25% of the reverse. A gem cent in every respect, and it has to be close to an "RB" designation by PCGS. Great eye appeal. It is difficult to find any identifying marks on this cent; a tiny speck of darker toning in the field before the bottom edge of the coronet will have to suffice for this purpose. E-MDS with a small segment of an inner circle still visible at the dentil tips at the lower left of star 3. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Called MS65 choice and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21125. Bland says MS65 and alone as CC#1. Our grade is MS65. Ted's envelope includes his note "The most perfect N3 of the non-proofs-JAB (Jerry A. Bobbe)". PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

Sharpness near mint state but there is a small arc of microscopic reddish verdigris at the lower half of the 31 in the date and a few microscopic specks of similar verdigris on the reverse at ES-OF-AM. None of the verdigris is deep or visible without the aid of a glass. The only contact marks are a pair of faint hairline scratches at CE in CENT. Lustrous steel brown and light chocolate with reddish chocolate toning covering the right third of the reverse (which is the only significant distraction on this cent). Traces of faded mint color show in protected areas around stars 1-4. EDS, before any die cracks on the obverse. Called AU55 and CC#1 in the Bland census. 1831 N-10 R3 PCGS graded MS62RB. PCGS graded MS-62 Red & Brown. Large Letters Reverse. Frosty mint red fading to steel brown, at least a third of the mint color remaining. A speck of greenish verdigris at the rim left of the first S in STATES and a streak of darker toning slanting under the N in CENT are the only significant marks. Unfortunately this cent was poorly struck, especially on the portrait. The strike is quite similar to what you so often see on the N-3, N-5, and N-7 Small Letters Reverse cents of 1829. Late die state with a rim cud break at star 9 and a die crack from the first S in STATES along the wreath to the dentils over the left side of the O in OF. Late state examples of this variety usually come softly struck, but the strike on this example is especially weak. Ungraded by Noyes due to the strike, but his photo # is 55083. Our grade is MS60. EDS but not quite the earliest state (although this is the earliest state Ted was able to acquire). There is a fine radial die crack to the dentils from the outer point of star 4 and from the end of the crack right of the date down to the dentils.
