Lot 1234
1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68. Nice original toning on both sides. Looks like a nice cameo coin even though this feature isn't mentioned on the NGC grade label. Definitely cameo frost on the devices. Only 880 Proofs struck for this Proof-only date.

Rarest of the rare in the Morgan series, considered by all to be the King of the Morgan Dollars and for obvious reasons, so few Proofs were minted and it is from these few that tens of thousands of collectors, if not hundreds of thousands, must compete with one another for ownership of the small floating supply on the market at any one time.

The coin is, quite simply, a spectacular gem. As can be seen in the photographs, it has acquired in its 114-odd years of existence lovely original iridescent shades of color, deeply saturated color. No doubt this is one of the rare few which were kept in the original tissue wrapper from the Mint.

Where later Proof coins sold by the Philadelphia Mint are packaged in either cellophane (1930s-1950s) or flat-pack plastic by the mint, all pre-1916 coinage was sent to its recipients in simple jeweler's tissue paper. The tissue paper has a small amount of sulfur content. And it is this sulfur which imparts the marvelous colors you see on a few gem Proofs, like this glittering 1895.

Faithful to every detail from a full blow by the dies, the hair is crystal clear down to the tiniest hair strand at the brow and along Liberty's neck; this does not excludes the key curls above the ear, with only two of them appearing as though fused together. Furthermore, in this full blow by the dies, the viewer is presented with a finely detailed eagle, proud and assured, with full-featured wings outstretched and a feather-covered chest projecting sharply from the central part of this side of the design. The main design features are nicely frosted. The coin's near perfection speaks for itself: grading Proof 68, is housed in NGC holder 1743100-014 and will forever remind us just how spectacular these early Morgan dollars were in Proof condition "back in the day" as the American expression goes. Let the current market price be your starting point for bidding. As seems inevitable whenever a great rarity like a Superb Gem Proof 1895 Morgan dollar changes hands, the interest and value only intensifies, year after year. Pop 3; none finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7330) .

Of historic note: With the circulation strikes either figments of the imagination or (if 12,000 pieces were actually made) lost forever in the mass meltings after World War I, the Proof 1895 Silver Dollar has become one of the roadblocks to collectors to assembling the extremely popular Morgan Dollar series. As has been observed by many before us, most of the survivors are prejudiced in one form or another through mishandling and/or crude attempts at cleaning. Gems are therefore rare and highly sought after.
Estimated Value $90,000 - 100,000.

Lot 1235
1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. A gorgeous glittering totally white gem cameo Proof. The key date to the Morgan Dollar series. Mint records seem to imply that 12,000 business strike Morgan Dollars were delivered in 1895, yet not a single one of these has ever been spotted. Either all 12,000 were stored at the Mint to be melted in later years, or the coins delivered were dated 1894. More recently, suspicions now point to the possibility non-Proofs of this issue are nothing more than a myth.

Regardless of which theory you adhere to, the lack of business strike 1895 Morgan Dollars has landed the Proofs of this date in the proverbial Catbird Seat (a reference to James Thurber's 1942 short story). And sitting pretty the 1895 Proof does! The 1895 vaults to the top of rarity and desirability in today's hobby. It is, without question, the one people point to most as the quintessential "must have" year in this long-lived, widely collected series. The present Lot offers a fabulous Gem Proof 66 representative whose surfaces shimmer, dance, and delight with reflectiveness rarely seen. It sparkles as the viewer tilts the coin from side to side admiring its beauty. Mouthwatering silvery brilliance. The mirror field conspires with the cameo-frosted devices to mesmerize anyone who stares at it long enough. A landmark offering for the silver dollar enthusiast. Pop 12; 11 in 67, 7 in 68 (PCGS # 7330) .

1897 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. Old holder. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides. From one side to the other the luminous mirror reflective quality glows with firebolt brilliance from the multicolor aspect imparted by years of careful storage. In the period in which this coin was made, weak strikes tend not to occur. The mint made a good-faith effort to produce sharp, well-made Proofs. That is why it is a pleasure to report a strike with preciseness only now and then found. Only 731 Proofs struck. Pop 21; 14 in 67; 4 in 68. (PCGS # 7332) .

1901 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65. Light hairlines on obverse. Untoned. Beaming silver color bursts from original surfaces untouched by toning. A strong strike as well, making this a desirable Gem Proof specimen of a very scarce year (Mint States 1901-P dollars are hard to come by). Another first-rate example from a consignor whose offerings show consistently high quality, this 1901 Proof too, displays a precision strike on the legends and main devices, which is unusual for the date, and not even a trace of soft detail at the hair waves. 813 Proofs struck. Pop 39; 38 finer; 23 in 66; 12 in 67; 3 in 68. (PCGS # 7336) .

Lot 1246
1903 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 68 Cameo. A fully white gem. Unforgettably beautiful lightly frosted motifs and deep-mirrored fields form a pleasing cameo contrast, especially on the reverse. Entirely brilliant with just outstanding beauty in a Morgan silver dollar of this vintage. Typically seen without cameo details, as the die preparation was plainly different than the two-tone frosted Proofs of earlier years, particularly the Morgan dollar Proofs of the 1890s where heavy frost on the motifs was the rule of thumb. A pleasing Superb Gem with extraordinary eye appeal at this grade level, and among the finest Proofs certified within any designation by NGC. This sparkling gem will no doubt pass any visual test you wish to throw at it, for it is that spectacular. A total of 5 cameo Proofs graded at NGC. Very rare.Pop 3; none finer. (PCGS # 7338) .

1903-S Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. A wonderful untoned brilliant white example. A lustrous example whose snow white brilliance whirls dizzily around the surface. From the luster, we must take stock of the details of the design of this prestigious '03-S issue. Given the proper amount of strike pressure, the coin was fully brought up by the dies including all important high points. The strike is essentially full in all areas including the breast, and eagle's legs. This is a most attractive 1903-S Morgan silver dollar (PCGS # 7288) .

1903-S Morgan Dollar. NGC graded MS-63. Mostly untoned. Scarce date in high grades. A choice specimen the optimum scarcity for an S-mint Morgan, lustrous throughout. The gleam off the surfaces show signs of steady white frostiness. Agreeably well struck to say the least, in fact fully so, with only a few minor scuffs like the one on Liberty's cheek causing it to fall short of the MS64 level (PCGS # 7288) .

1903-S Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. A very choice example, untoned and blast white. In tune with the 1904 S-mint issue in this series, the 1903-S is a remarkably scarce coin in the finer Mint State grades despite a respectable original mintage of 1.2 million pieces. It seems likely that many coins of this date were included among the 270,232,722 silver dollars that the U.S. government melted under the provisions of the Pittman Act (the silver was sold to the British government which then shipped it off to India during a silver panic in the subcontinent). Bright and fully lustrous, the otherwise untoned surfaces exhibit smooth and silvery iridescence. There are very few of the usual contact marks, and neither side reveals any singularly distracting nicks or spots. A bold strike rounds out this coin's list of positive attributes (PCGS # 7288) .
