Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 973
1916-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Old green holder. Nicely toned. on both sides. A scintillating, lustrous, and exquisitely preserved Gem, the satin luster conspiring with the delicate toning to almost break your heart with its beauty and serene competence of manufacture. Struck with controlled precision throughout as is sometimes, but not always, typical of this S-mint release from the first year of issue.

Mint State U.S. silver coins in 1916 came off the press with unusual "textured" surfaces -- unusual and alluring. Such luster is especially nice on high-end Uncirculated examples like the present half dollar. Compared to later issues which sport more typical mint frost, these early dates are in a class all by themselves. Any collector who is familiar with them may find it rewarding to add this '16-S to his collection. Pop 79; 14 finer; 13 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 6568) .
Estimated Value $4,400 - 4,600.

Lot 976
1919-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Nicely toned. Scarce date. Choice fields rippling with satiny luster. The more raised designs stand out nicely against this finish. No heavy toning, just silver-white color intermingled with delicate shades of auburn and antique gray. A slightly diminished impact was left by the blow of the dies that struck this key date issue, but soft skirtlines and leg definition are considered normal within the 1916-21 half dollar group with their subtle features. Starting in 1923 and thereafter, the skirt lines would be strengthened noticeably.

Of historic interest: Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the Telephone in 1876, spent the years 1906-21 on, among other things, development of the hydrofoil boat. His HD-4, powered by two aerial propellers, set a world's marine speed record of 70.86 miles per hour on September 9, 1919, the year of this 1919-S half dollar, a record that stood for ten years. Pop 47; 109 finer; 60 in 64; 38 in 65; 11 in 66. (PCGS # 6579) .
