Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 51
1817 N-17 R4 F12. Fine-12. Sharpness VF25 but cleaned and retoned a slightly glossy light chocolate brown. The surfaces show minor roughness and there are some contact marks, including a dull scratch from the ear to star 2 and a rim dent under star 13. Not an especially attractive cent given the superior quality of this collection, but the die state is quite rare. LDS with a raised retained cud break at TATE. Noyes graded F12 and finest of the late die state in his census (which explains why Mr. Naftzger settled for a less-than-superb example). Our grade is net F12.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

The obverse is a very attractive lustrous bluish steel brown and chocolate with faded mint color showing in protected areas while the reverse is a uniform frosty lighter medium brown. The surfaces are satiny and virtually void of defects. The best identifying marks are a small, faint spot of slightly darker toning left of star 1 and a few specks of similar toning between stars 12 & 13. M-LDS with some tiny rim cud breaks from star 3 to midway between stars 4 & 5. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and CC#7, his photo #21738. The surfaces are satiny and lustrous. Late die state with a series of small rim cud breaks extending from star 3 to halfway between stars 4 & 5, and these cuds are slightly stronger than those on the previous example. Called MS60 and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #21483. Bland says MS60+ and tied for CC#6. Our grade is MS60+. PCGS Population 1; 1 finer in 66BN.

The barest hint of rub on the highest points of the design from mint state. E-MDS with a die crack through the top of UNITED and the adjacent ST plus a radial crack from the top of the T in UNITED to the dentil above, but without a radial crack to the dentils from the crack just left of the first S in STATES. 1818 N-2 R4+ PCGS graded AU58. PCGS graded AU-58. Choice glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter steel brown and tan in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and offer outstanding eye appeal. The only defects are a thin nick or pre-striking planchet mark over the E in CENT with a larger one over that T, plus a well hidden pinscratch at the dentil tips over the D in UNITED. MDS with an additional die crack up to the dentils from the earlier crack at UNITED-S just left of that S. The crack through the tops of UNITED is stronger but the radial crack to the dentils from the junction of the U & N has not formed. MDS-LDS with a strong radial die crack to the dentils from the junction of the U & N in UNITED, and the section between the two radial cracks at NIT is rising as a retained cud, strongest on its left end. A neat intermediate die state and a very attractive example of this tough die variety. Called AU50 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #21829. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#2. 1818 N-2 R4+ PCGS graded F12. PCGS graded Fine-12. Glossy light chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, but there are a half dozen fine hairline scratches on the obverse plus a stronger dull one across the jawline. The scratches are old and blend perfectly into the attractive toning, but they do detract from an otherwise very nice lower grade cent. Rare late die state with a raised retained cud break over NITED nearly extending to the adjacent S (actually this is two separate retained cuds divided by the radial crack to the dentils up from the center of the T). The area of this cud over IT is not raised as much as the other areas, so this is not quite the terminal state of the die. Although this cent is far from being in the condition census for the variety, it is the finest of the LDS according to the Noyes census. Our grade is F12 net VG10. PCGS Population 1; 3 finer, 1 in 58, 1 in 62BN, 1 in 64BN.

1818 N-4 R4+ PCGS graded AU58. PCGS graded AU-58. Attractive glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown and tan in protected areas. No corrosion or verdigris and only minor contact marks, including a very faint diagonal hairline across the upper part of the cheek and a few very light contact marks at the O in ONE (which may be pre-striking planchet marks that didn't completely press out due to the weak strike in that area thanks to the late die state). LDS with extensive swelling in the center of the obverse (which caused the weakness at O in ONE) and a strong radial die crack from the dentils through star 3 into the field near the lips. A fantastic example of this classic rarity in the Middle Date Cent series. Called EF45 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 and tied for CC#1 honors with one other example, his photo #20688. 1818 Struck Counterfeit from Handmade Dies. 14 Stars with Continuous Wreath Reverse Design. Double Struck Obverse. About Good-3. Slightly sharper on the reverse but this piece has fine hairline scratches on the obverse and several dull dents on the reverse, the largest of these down from just below the E in CENT. The date and reverse legends are complete and clear except for the second S in STATES, which was obliterated by the strong reverse dent. Glossy dark chocolate brown with corrosion-free surfaces. Struck from crudely-made dies that approximate the normal Matron Head design, but there are 14 stars on the obverse, the portrait of Ms Liberty is crude and cut in very shallow relief, the wreath is continuous, and there is no fraction at the bottom of the reverse. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA begins at 1:00. That places the U in UNITED is where one would expect to find the O in OF on a "normal" large cent. The obverse was double struck with a rotation of about 2 millimeters between the two strikes leaving an extra 8 clearly visible to the right of the "normal" date. The reverse is not double struck and is much sharper than the obverse, as usual, as the obverse is bulged outward on the few examples known. The dies are aligned head-to-foot, similar to the regular Federal cents, with only a slightly clockwise rotation. A strong die crack extends from the rim into the field between stars 11 & 12, and this crack has been observed on the three examples known to this cataloger (although it is strongest on this piece). It should also be noted that all three of the examples studied by this cataloger have a double struck obverse, but all show a different rotation or shift between impressions (so we know the die itself was not doubled). None of the known examples shows evidence of being double struck on the reverse. Comparable to the famous 1848 Small Date struck counterfeit cents, although far fewer of these 1818 cents are known (three known). Weight 171.1 grains, which makes this example the heaviest of the known examples. Diameter is 29.0 millimeters. (See page 360 of the November 2000 issue of Penny-Wise for a discussion of this interesting and extremely rare oddity.) The variety has been known for well over 100 years. The first appearance was of a low grade example offered in the Maris collection auctioned by H. P. Smith 6/21/1886:284, and a more recent offering of a nicer example was made in a Stack's sale 1/20/2004:2112. This example was discovered in a junk box circa 1988 and was the subject of an article in Coin World written by Michael Hodder (article included in the Naftzger envelope, and this coin is plated in the article).

1819 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS63BN. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Glossy chocolate and steel brown with lighter chocolate toning in protected areas of the obverse. The only marks are a small nick high on the neck under the earlobe and a faint splash of slightly lighter brown toning over the N in CENT. Nicely struck LDS. The coronet tip and upper stars are well struck, which is seldom the case in the earlier rusted die state. Called MS60 and tied for CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #35155 (but second finest known of the late, lapped die state). Our grade is MS60. PCGS Population 1; 1 finer in 65BN.
