Lot 5151
RUSSIA. 1/2 Ruble, 1726.
This coin is very rare, and was struck in a year of historic significance. In February of 1726, the Empress created the Supreme Secret Council, to deal with "matters of exceptional significance." The six council members in effect became her personal advisors to such a degree that they ruled with her. In fact, when she died the following year, she appointed Peter to succeed her but nominated the Council as regent. Catherine I was Empress of Russia for a mere two years and three months. Sev-790; Uzd-656. Catherine I. Original Strike: not a Novodel. Extremely Rare. Light gray, no post-minting blemishes. Obverse slightly off-center. NGC graded VF-35.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

RUSSIA. Pattern Grivennik, 1726. B-33, GM-335, Uzd-2394. Novodel. 41 mm. 56.7 grams. Edge-4 (Lettered: "Russian Grivennik Moscow Mint"). Crowned Catherine I monogram. Reverse: Imperial eagle over 10 value dots. Value and date around. This type is referred to as the "Menshikov Grivennik" because of Prince Menshikov's position as the "power behind the throne" in the reign of Catherine I, and more specifically because the monogram reflects his power, by some interpretations, in that his own monogram is hidden in the curls of the Empress. Extremely Rare. Too large for holder, with tag. Wonderful, glossy chocolate-brown surfaces retaining a hint of mint red. Centered and boldly struck. NGC graded MS-64.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
