Prior to Alexander's conquests, much of Asia Minor was under Persian domination, administered by governors or satraps under the direct control of the Great King. Karia, on the southwest coast of Asia Minor, was a far flung Persian province more immersed in Hellenic culture than in that of its overlords. Its satrap, Maussollos, personified this regional feature, his fondness for Greek art quite obviously represented in the present coin which features a splendid and inspired depiction of the god Apollo in fine style. But perhaps the most renowned example of his artistic sympathies is to be seen in the tomb which he commissioned, the Mausoleum. The structure was so impressive in size and artistry that it was regarded as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
