Lot 181
ASTP, 1975, FLOWN Brass Flashlight (5x1") This brass flashlight is marked on the barrel "ACR FA-5, Serial No. 3005, Date of Mfg, 8-72) and was used by Slayton onboard ASTP. There is a small piece of white velcro attached to the movable head of this flashlight. Although apparently still containing its original batteries, the light no longer works.

NASA gave one of these flashlights to each Apollo and Apollo Soyuz astronaut for use throughout their mission. It proved to be quite useful throughout the mission. Given to his family after the flight, this piece of memorabilia has been in the consignor's safe deposit box since the flight. A similar lot, from the Gene Cernan collection, realized over $8,000 in a Heritage auction in March 2008.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,500.

ASTP, 1975, FLOWN Gold Robbins Medallion with Diamond. This striking custom medallion has the launch date (July 15, 1975) and the "entry" date (July 24, 1975) engraved on the reverse and a diamond inserted (probably post landing) in place of the sun on the face. There is an "F" and a 10k gold marking on the rim. Mounted in a gold bezel and in pristine condition, this medallion has been in the consignor's safe deposit box for almost 30 years. To our knowledge, this is the first medallion of this type offered in public auction.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,500.

ASTP, 1975, FLOWN Slayton Teaspoon (7") This stainless steel spoon was made by "Continental" as marked on the stem. It has a bilingual "Apollo/Soyuz" and a "NASA" emblem on the front of the handle and "DMP (Docking Module Pilot) - Donald K. Slayton" on the back. The spoon shows minor signs of wear, but is in excellent condition given its age. Slayton used this spoon during his flight and gave it to the consignor when he returned. It has been in the consignor's safe deposit box for the past 30+ years. Only one set of silverware was given each astronaut for use during the flight, thus making this spoon unique and irreplaceable.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 5,000.

Apollo Soyuz, 1975, FLOWN Crew Patch. This 4" patch, sewn partially with gold thread, is mounted on a 1974 Robert McCall limited edition lithograph (professionally matted and framed to 24x20"). The NASA descriptive plaque, mounted in the lower center of the print reads: "Presented to the family of / Donald K. "Deke" Slayton / in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, when East met West". This reproduction of Robert McCall's "Apollo-Soyuz Test Project" was commissioned by the NASA Art Program in 1974 in anticipation of the mission. The crew patch was flown on the historic mission, which took place from July 15 to 24, 1975". A rare and attractive piece of space memorabilia.

Space Autographs, Alan Shepard & "Bobbie" Slayton Autographs. Signed on a book plate inside the front cover of his, and Deke's, book "Moon Shot" (1994, First Edition, 383pp., hard with dust jacket). The plate is also signed by co-authors Jay Barbarree and Howard Benedict. This would appear to be an author's edition as it still has trim markings on the edges of the pages. Bobbie Slayton is Deke's widow. She signed the book plate as he had already passed on by the time the book was published. ALSO, a magnetic door sign, hand signed by Deke Slayton in black marker. This appears to have actually been used by him, probably after he left NASA - where they would have printed him a door nameplate if he had needed one. Both pieces are in excellent condition.
Estimated Value $100 - 150.

ASTP, 1975, Russian "Slava" (Glory) Presentation Wristwatch. This wristwatch is engraved on the back with the autograph of Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, General Secretary of the Communist Party/Russian Premier from 1966-1982. He undoubtedly presented Slayton, and the rest of the ASTP crew, with these watches in honor of their flight - the first joint US/Soviet space flight and a symbol of political detent between the two countries.

This watch is automatic with day/date indicators and a leather strap (some corrosion on the buckle). It is in its original flat plastic case with the Slava name on the inside of the lid.

We have been told by a Russian expert that political memorabilia from Brezhnev is rare in its own right and rarely on the market. This piece is probably one of the very few given to an American, almost unique as regards space and the first that we are aware of to have been put up for auction. Whether you are a political junky, a space buff or a specialist in ASTP memorabilia, don't miss this opportunity to acquire a piece of space history.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 10,000.

Apollo Soyuz, Misc, Fed. Aero. Int. Diplome de Record. Lot of five similar diplomas (each framed to 14x11") issued for five different records that were broken on this flight. These include: 1) "the first joint spaceflight based on distance by a group, 1,488,320km", 2) "the absolute world altitude record for a group of 237km", 3) "the absolute world endurance record for a group of 46 hours, 46 minutes and 44 seconds" (while the spacecrafts were separated, but both were in orbit together), 4) "the absolute world record for a grouped mass of 20,997 kg", and 5) "the absolute world duration record for a group of 53 hours, 09 minutes and 17 seconds" (while the spacecrafts were joined). Each diploma is hand-signed by F.A.I. officials and has an official embossed seal of authenticity. The F.A.I. is the international body recognized by all countries that certifies all aviation and space flight records. This set of diplomas was given to the consignor in honor of his accomplishments on this flight. The other crew members (Stafford, Brand, Leonov and Kubason) received similar sets, as did both NASA and the Russian Space Agency. These are rare documents and a must-buy for any student of space history and the ASTP flight in particular.

ASTP, 1975, Fisher Space Pen (5") A similar, two part ribbed pen, but with the name "Fisher" inscribed on the pocket clip and no "style" marking on the pen. There is a remnant of red tape wrapped around the pocket clip and a red stain on the upper barrel where the tape touched the barrel. The enclosed, working cartridge appears to be brass and is unmarked. The lower barrel of the pen shows some signs of use.

Our gut says that this pen looks as if it might have been FLOWN, but there is no evidence of that fact except that Slayton thought to give it to his family after the flight. Just one of life's many mysteries.

Apollo Soyuz, 1975 - Russian "1975" Cloth Calendar (15x20") This striking calendar is in its original frame (15x21") with paper matting backing on the frame. The backing is hand inscribed in Russian with the date 22 February 1975. The inscription reads: "A gift to Evon Collins from Igor Milikoff and the rest of the (Russian) Engineers. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your warm hospitality. We will never forget this meeting or this evening in Houston".
There are two additional notes scotch-taped to the reverse of the frame. One reads: "My thanks to Anatole Forostenko, Chief Russian language instructor for the American ASTP crew for inscribing this memento to me" (unsigned, from Evon Collins) and "In memory of our American-Russian space venture, Apollo/Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) scheduled for July 1975. One of the Russian working groups, seven engineers, visited my home during the evening of February 22, 1975. I entertained a few Pine Bluff friends (now of Houston) and co-workers from NASA Johnson Space Center. Charlotte Ober, Secretary to our ASTP crew was among my guests. She asked permission to bring her Soviet friends and their presence indeed became the highlight of the evening". It is signed by Evon Collins and dated Friendswood, TX, April 8, 1975.
An important piece of original ASTP memorabilia. When you remember the suspicion with which Americans and Russians regarded each other at the time, this event represents one of the first signs of a thaw in the cold war. Fascinating and attractive.
Estimated Value $100 - 150.
