Lot 1306
Handsome Indian Carved Ivory Footed Box And Assorted Vessels. Nicely crafted box, c. 1960-1980, its ornate lid with a view of the Taj Mahal, flanked by portrait busts of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, for whom the edifice was built. The feet of the box, and the side panels enriched with carvings of lions, tigers, elephants and other animals of the chase. Along with this, a small beaker and goblet, of carved green stones, probably Indian also. Lastly, a Tibetan metal bottle of vase-like form, encrusted with blue and red glass, resembling the antique turquoise and coral bottles of a hundred years ago. Size of box: 4¼ x 6½ x 2 5/8 in. Lot of 4 items.

Lot of Russian Decorative Metal Arts. Russia, 20th century. From Kavkaz, Russia, a multi-element belt done in the traditional engraved silver with niello enhancements. The belt segments of dual joined hemispheres linked by chain, with the buckle halves of triangular form, and a securing pin fashioned as a miniature dagger. Amid the floral decoration is the city's name, Kavkaz. Length: 28¾ in. Another buckle, composed of two triangular elements, in the venerable technique of enameling and set "gems." This with floral arabesques of lighter hue, placed against a background of rich deep blue. Height: 3¼ in. Last, and probably the oldest, a "bull's eye" buckle with exceptionally fine enamel work. The colors are lighter and brighter, with an almost Italian Renaissance feel to the artwork. Width: 3¼ in. Lot of 3 items.

Purchased c. 1964 at Spanierman Gallery from Ira Spanierman's father, who ran a well-known auction house at 50th and Madison Avenue in New York City. Recent carvings sell for $20-30, but this carving is at least 45 years old.

Moreau, August. Aurore. Late 19th Century French Bronze. Shield inscribed on globe base "Aurore (Dawn) Pat Aug Moreau Me 'daillc (?) D'or L' Exposition." Also signed by the artist on the side of the globe. Height 23½ inches. On a green marble base with a brass inscription. Also included is a heavy white marble pedestal 34 in. high, 9 in. across top. A most impressive piece, superb condition and easily worth our conservative estimate.
