c. 1850 Face Design Original Artwork for Playing Cards. Thirteen original pen and ink drawings for face designs of playing cards and one drawing of what may have been intended for the back of these cards, to be printed by Jose Bau, Valencia, Spain. Includes the 2, 3 and 10 of Coins, and the 1, 3, 10, 11 and 12 of Cups, all about 4 x 2¾ in. With five smaller drawings, some with penciled notations, of Coin and Cup designs. Most have pinholes in the corners, perhaps to hold the paper in place while the artist worked. The designs in these drawings are similar to a set printed by Jose Bau about 1850 and illustrated in the Fournier Museum catalog, Volume 1, Spain #250. Age toned, sometimes heavily, around the edges, otherwise near fine.
Estimated Value $750 - 1,000.

Lot 950
c. 1880 Original Face Design Artwork for Playing Cards. Eight hand-drawn, pen and ink designs for the faces of a set of playing cards, plus another drawing for the back of the cards, all in 4 x 2¼ in. format. The designs are for the Ace, Jack, Knight and King of Swords and the same values for Clubs, though in this case the club is the wooden type. Each of these face cards is enclosed in a box of precisely ruled lines and appear to be finished. The design for the back, however, was left unfinished, but does include the name of the intended printer for this deck, "Sebastian Comas y Ricart." No place is given, but we know that this firm operated in Barcelona, Spain as early as 1848 and as late as 1926. These designs appear to be the same as those used on a set cataloged in the Fournier Museum catalog, Volume 2, Spain #474, which Fournier dates to the end of the 1800's. Fine; evenly age toned, and tipped to a sheet of heavy paper. (9 items on 1 card).
Estimated Value $600 - 800.

Ornate Masonic Apron with Numerous Masonic Symbols, c. 1840. 15 x 19 in., cream colored silk with printed symbols in blue, red and yellow, surrounded by an extremely ornate, gilt, sequin and tassel fringe. The center part is padded, creating a three dimensional effect. There is minor fraying, a few minor spots and a few small, barely noticeable holes (mostly under the upper fringe), but otherwise in excellent condition, and mounted in a plexiglass case. Besides the usual trowel, compass and square, this apron has the all-seeing eye (as seen on the back of a United States one dollar bill) in red, blue, black and yellow at the top, and in the lower part a scene in the temple, a sword, a beehive, a heart, a ladder to heaven, an urn spouting fire and clouds, two pillars each with a different globe on top, and various other symbols. An apron such as this would have been worn by the Worshipful Master of a Masonic Lodge. This is a wonderful piece of Masonic History.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,000.

Rare Early American Full Plate "Fishing" Tintype. C. 1870. A well-dressed man is seated on a small boulder holding his cane fishing pole and its string within his fingers, in a staged mountain stream setting. The photography studio set design has a woodland or mountain stream flowing with an old Spanish mission far in the background. The details are exceptionally sharp and distinct, the tintype being in virtually mint condition. A light rose colored tint has been added to the man's cheek. A watch chain with what appears to possibly be a small gold nugget attached is prominent, near center. Housed within its apparent original mahogany oval mat and frame with some gold colored inner trim (7 x 5 in. oval mat and 13 x 11 in. wooden frame). The finest early "fishing" related tintype image we have ever encountered.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
