Seated Liberty Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 952
1840 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 62 PQ. Lovely golden toning on both sides. A Premium Quality coin for the grade. Attractive deep amber colored accents gleam from within a thin overlay of natural old-silver patina and the entire design is keenly sharp, including all stars. A strong lens is required to find any of the few faint hairlines in the mirror surface.

Proof Seated dollars struck in 1840 to 1850 share a common reverse identified by die lumps on the final A of AMERICA. This is diagnostic. Breen thought this was a restrike but the current belief runs the other way since many other denominations used their reverses year in and year out (the few Proofs made each year did not stress the reverses, so why discard them).

Some diagnostics of the present coin several fine curved lathe lines on the shield below LIBERTY while the reverse has several die lines from the dentils over (STAT)ES O(F). Just recently graded by PCGS. Pop 1; 18 finer with 9 in 63, 7 in PF63, 3 in PF64.
Estimated Value $23,000 - 25,000.

1859 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 63. Even grey toning on both sides. Well struck. A sharp specimen that spares little in the way of compromises with its natural original color on both sides. Strike is sharper than average business strikes by a wide margin, which is why collectors prefer the fine detail of a Proof and why the Mint chose to sell Proofs to collectors beginning in 1858. A really attractive Proof 63 example without the usual handling marks seen on so many others. Only 800 proofs minted. Pop 33; 51 finer (PCGS # 7002) .

1860-O Liberty Seated Dollar. ANACS graded MS-62. A very frosty coin with some natural mottled russet toning on both sides. Thoroughly enjoyable to examine. The Treasury Department released several hundred 1859-O and 1860-O dated seated dollars in its massive silver dollar distributions during the early 1960s. Most surviving 1860-O dollars in Mint condition trace to these. In a modern ANACS holder (PCGS # 6950) .

1862 Liberty Seated Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. A very choice proof example with alternating silvery and midnight blue toning on both sides. Who can deny that with 550 Proof seated dollars produced in 1862, few would exist 146 years later in choice or gem condition? While not as scarce as the Proofs of 1861, the 1862 issue is similar in overall rarity to the 1859 and 1860. This piece has attractive mirrored fields and each side has toning patina the deepens away from the centers. A bold looking example of this desirable and popular issue. Pop 7; 2 finer in 65 (PCGS # 87005) .

Lot 969
1866 Liberty Seated Dollar. With motto. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. First year issue. Light hint of gold toning. Nice eye appeal. An pleasingly original and highly reflective specimen, something of a benchmark for other examples that share this Proof 64 grade. As expected on a carefully made Proof the strike is bold and crisp, indeed it is quite full, and certainly all of the Liberty and eagle details there to admire with or without the aid of a magnifying glass. Something that possibly will attract many bidders. 725 Proofs minted. Pop 11; 12 finer; 9 in 65; 2 in 66; 1 in 68. (PCGS # 87014) .

Lot 970
1869 Liberty Seated Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67. In NGC holder 1948078-006. This coin stands alone as the finest-certified NGC Proof 67 "Star" seated dollar, and it is undeniably among the finest-known survivors of this With Motto design. Deeply toned "spotlight" surfaces radiate smooth reflective mirrors amplified by richly frosted devices that more than uphold the validity of the "Star" designation. With an overall keen strike and not even one a distracting problem in evidence, this Superb Gem Proof 1869 seated dollar would be a stand-out in any numismatic holding.

The Proof 1869 Seated Dollar was struck to the extent of 600 specimens -0 a mintage figure similar to that of the other Proof With Motto from the 1860s. Although also popular with type collectors and investors, this issue enjoys its greatest demand from seated dollar date collectors who understand the rarity and conditionally challenging nature of the business strike 1869. Pop 1; None finer at NGC. Recently added to the Census. (PCGS # 7017) .
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.
