1815 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 5 over 2. NGC graded MS-64. In NGC holder 1619260-004. Wonderful blue and golden toning. Well struck and choice for this rare date. One of the finest examples we have ever handled. A fascinating example of this key Bust half dollar date that is one of the top dozen known. Even disputatious experts agree it ranks among of the finest in terms of aesthetic enjoyment, though tied with several others at this technical grade level. The toning supplements greatly to coin's allure, with rich colorful shades over iridescent lustrous surfaces. There is a concentrated ring of purple and blue at the margins on both sides. Both dies have minor clash marks, as seen on a large number of half dollars in 1815. Mintage fell to 47,150 pieces when the climax of the Napoleonic Wars reached a crisis, upsetting the world's specie payments system (see below).

According to historical accounts, the 1815 coinage that was produced was circulated through the Planter's Bank of New Orleans. Most survivors today are well circulated or impaired. Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated coins can be found but it takes some doing. However, this particular specimen seems to be with us only through the favor of providence. It belongs in a world-class set of United States coins. Pop 7; 2 finer in 65 (PCGS # 6108) .

Historic note: Regarding the damage to the rolling and cutting apparatus, while this affected the Mint planchet preparation process, another reason for lack of half dollar coinage after 1815 was a shortage of deposits. The War of 1812 had officially ended on December 24, 1814, but news of this was not fully disseminated until well into 1815 (the Battle of New Orleans, showcasing the heroism of Andrew Jackson, took place in January 1815 after the war had ended). The commerce of Europe remained chaotic, disrupted not only by the aftermath of the British-American "War of 1812," but also the wider-ranging, more destructive Napoleonic Wars including the French-Russian "War of 1812."
Estimated Value $40,000 - 45,000.

1829 Capped Bust Half Dollar. . O-111, Rarity-2. NGC graded MS-66. Star. A gorgeous gem example glittering with semi reflective surfaces and gorgeous golden and iridescent blue toning at the borders. Only a few Gem examples of this variety are known. In 1990, Don Parsley identified four MS65 coins and an MS63 as the finest he was aware of. According to auction records, the best example to appear on the market within the last several years is a MS65 prooflike in the January 2005 FUN sale conducted by Heritage.

Even though Overton-111 is considered to be a common variety, it is an significant example in such high grade. The recutting on the reverse is clearly visible, and there is no evidence of die cracks or other die defects, except for a few light clash marks. This is a lovely half dollar with prooflike fields and frosty devices on the obverse, and fully frosty and lustrous reverse surfaces. It is mostly brilliant save for light peripheral iridescence on both sides. Pop 1; none finer. This beauty has just recently been added to the census (PCGS # 6154) .

On this variety, the 9 in the date is recut at the right, the lips are parted to half the depth of the mouth, the stars are drawn to the edge, and the A's in AMERICA are filled at the top.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.

1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded edge. NGC graded MS-63. In NGC holder 4484000-008. Well struck and overlaid with uniform medium grayish-violet toning on both sides. Rare low mintage date as a mere 1,200 or so were coined. The year 1836 would become one of major importance in the history of the Philadelphia Mint. Lettered edge Half Dollars, such as the design replaced by this Reeded Edge version, had been in production since minting began in 1794. By the early 1830s, however, growing bottlenecks appeared as the Mint was called upon to strike ever larger quantities of coins each year. New equipment was introduced in 1836 using steam-operated presses for the first time, like the presses used in Britain and Europe. At the same time the switch was made to "close" (as opposed to open or "wide") collars to enable a more consistent strike. As this attractive 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar shows the changes achieved their purpose. Pop 5; 5 finer with 3 in 64, 2 in 65 (PCGS # 6175) .
