Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 38
1800 C-1 R2. AU-55. Frosty dark chocolate brown and steel with subtle hints of bluish steel overtone. Sharply struck and quite attractive, just a touch of friction on the highest points from mint state. The surfaces are covered with satiny mint luster. The only marks are a few tiny ticks on the cheek and a thin nick in the field below the Y in LIBERTY. A tiny planchet flake in the dentils over the left edge of the U in UNITED may be the best identifying mark. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0. The fields on both sides are covered with fine die lines thanks to a fresh die lapping. Removed from a PCGS slab with an old green label graded AU55 (PCGS label included).
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,250.

1802/0 C-1 R6 Overdate 2 over 0, Reverse of 1800. VG-10. Struck over a spoiled Large Cent. A couple points sharper but there are spots of shallow corrosion on the rims, and many of these spots show microscopic traces of greenish verdigris. The surfaces inside the rims are mostly smooth and offer decent eye appeal, but there are areas of extremely faint roughness on both sides, strongest at ED in UNITED to CE in CENT. This roughness is mostly hidden under the rather glossy olive and chocolate brown patina. The devices are a slightly lighter shade of steel brown, and the contrast accents the details and adds to the eye appeal. The planchet was made from a spoiled large cent that was cut down to half cent size. Traces of the cent undertype are visible at ERT in LIBERTY, and the planchet is slightly beveled under the bust tip and 02 in the date. The date and legends are complete and clear and the overdate feature is obvious. Early die state. The area at the bust tip and the opposing area at OF are almost always weakly struck on this variety, and this piece is no exception. Weight 80.0 grains. Called "About Fine" by Breen and listed as tied for CC#5 in his census. That still seems accurate. Comes with an impressive provenance.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 35,000.

1802/0 C-2 R3 Overdate 2 over 0. VF-25. Reverse of 1803. Sharpness VF35 but a mark on the chin was carefully smoothed away leaving a very shallow depression in that spot, and there is a rim nick at the L in LIBERTY. Retoned a slightly glossy dark olive and steel with traces of chocolate brown on both sides. Extremely faint roughness is well hidden under the dark patina. EDS, Manley state 1.0. The date and legends are bold and the overdate is obvious. This is the plate coin in the Breen encyclopedia for his die state II and is plated in the Manley book to illustrate die state 1.0. Not perfect but still a sharp, attractive example of this popular overdate variety. Weight 84.9 grains.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000.

However, a glass reveals a few light contact marks on the obverse, including a fine hairline scratch through the eye to the curl under the hair ribbon. This scratch blends perfectly into the attractive toning and is not a significant distraction. EDS, Manley state 1.0. The die crack on the upper half of the reverse is present but very light. 1804 C-2 R6+. Fine-12. Low 4. A few points sharper, especially where fully struck up, but there are light contact marks scattered over both sides. A thin vertical nick under the eye and a dull horizontal scratch close over CE in CENT, plus a collection of hairline scratches at TED-STA are the notable ones. All the contact marks blend perfectly into the attractive glossy chocolate brown toning. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0 early. The die crack through the top of RTY is clear but does not extend to the right top of the E. Softly struck on the left edge of the reverse, as usual, while the details on the right side approach VF20. Second finest known by a very small margin and apparently the finest ever offered at auction. Better than the examples auctioned from the collections of Jack Robinson, J. R. Frankenfield, Dr. Wallace Lee, Mike Spurlock, Roger Cohen, or Jules Reiver, and a variety missing from the Bill Weber and Steven Ellsworth sales. A highlight of this outstanding collection.

1805 C-1 R2- Possibly Broadstruck. AU-55. Lustrous chocolate and steel. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal is consistent with a mint state example. The only marks are a tiny rim nick under the tip of the bust and another on the rim over the first S in STATES. MDS. The strike on this example is significantly different than usually seen as the rims are wide and flat giving this piece the look of a broadstruck mint error. This cataloger has seen similar strikes on a few 1805 and 1806 half cents, but the exact cause of the wide, flat rims is uncertain. The lack of a properly fitting striking collar is an obvious guess, but tight collars were not introduced until much later. Lot 77
1806 C-4 R1 Large 6. EF-45. Frosty medium chocolate and steel with lighter greenish olive in protected areas, especially on the reverse. A spot of reddish brown toning at the base of the O in OF and a small splash of darker olive brown toning at the U in UNITED are the notable marks. Otherwise just a few trivial contact marks of no consequence. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0. The repunching on the 6 is complete and bold, and the reverse is rotated 55 degrees CW. The bust tip is well struck, which is quite unusual for this variety, but there is some weakness in the leaves below ICA.
Estimated Value $300 - 400.
Ex Don Valenziano 7/94.

1807 C-1 R1. EF-40. Misaligned Dies. Frosty steel brown with lustrous lighter brown in protected areas and darker steel brown highpoints. E-MDS, Manley state 1.0 late, with the obverse slightly misaligned to K-9 and the reverse rotated 15 degrees CCW. Seldom found in a die state this early.

1807 C-1 R1. EF-40. Five points sharper with myriad extremely faint hairlines on the face and neck, none visible without a very strong glass. Otherwise the only defect is a tiny rim nick over the I in LIBERTY. Frosty chocolate brown and bluish steel with traces of tan in protected areas of the obverse. The surfaces are covered with attractive satiny flowline luster and the eye appeal is outstanding for the grade in spite of the trivial marks. M-LDS, Manley state 3.0. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CW.
Estimated Value $400 - 500.

1808/7 C-2 R3 Overdate 8 over 7. VF-30. Ten points sharper with several faint hairline scratches meandering about in the field before the face and neck, plus four dull pinpricks or small nicks in among the fine scratches. These four small contact marks are the only defects visible to the unaided eye, and the eye appeal of this piece is excellent otherwise. The portrait was very lightly smoothed for an unknown reason. Glossy chocolate and olive brown with frosty lighter brown in protected areas, especially on the reverse. The reverse is choice. EDS, Manley state 1.0, without a die crack at TY in LIBERTY. The overdate is bold.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,500.
Ex Chris McCawley 7/88.

Great eye appeal in spite of the single contact mark.
