Lot 7
1794 C-1a R3. EF-45 Plus. Large Edge Letters. Very attractive frosty dark chocolate brown with bluish steel overtones. The surfaces are satiny and virtually flawless. No hint of roughness or verdigris. The best identifying mark is a tiny, barely visible rim nick at BE in LIBERTY. A choice early half cent in every respect. Very close to an About Uncirculated grade. Nicely centered LDS, Manley state 3.0, with the reverse rotated 30 degrees CCW. Weight 100.1 grains. Called About Uncirculated in the Breen census, and it is easy to see why.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.

1794 C-1b R6. Fine-15. Small Edge Letters. Ten points sharper but covered with uniform microscopic roughness. The only verdigris is a tiny patch of very shallow reddish steel crust at the dentils right of Y in LIBERTY, and the only sign of contact is a minor nick on the rim at the E in AMERICA. Dark steel and olive. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the small edge lettering is bold. In the middle of the condition census for this very rare "B-Girl". Clearly superior to the J. R. Frankenfield, Dr. Wallace Lee, and Michael Spurlock examples, and missing from the Robinson, Weber, and Reiver collections. 103.3 grains.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000.

1794 C-2b R6. VG-7. Large Edge Letters. Sharpness Fine-15 or slightly better in places but the planchet was flattened at the top leaving LIBER and the opposing area at the left side of the fraction to the adjacent UN gone or severely weakened. The surfaces are covered with uniform microscopic granularity that is partially obscured under a slightly glossy dark olive and steel patina. No verdigris or additional contact marks. The date is strong and the legends are clear except where affected by the aforementioned dent. The large edge letters are complete and strong, including the ones in the dented area. EDS, Manley state 1.0, without any die clashmarks. The reverse is not rotated. Weight 104.5 grains. In the middle of the condition census with only three examples known grading better than Very Good.

1794 C-3a R5. VF-20. Small Edge Letters. Clipped Planchet. Very attractive glossy chocolate brown with delicate bluish steel overtones in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and show only a few trivial contact marks, including a tiny chip on the bust tip, a rim nick over the first T in STATES, and a minor rim bruise at IT in UNITED. Sharply struck LDS, Manley 2.0, with a bulge in the field right of the date. A very rare die state according to Manley, and this is the Manley plate coin for the die state. In addition, there is a rather large planchet clip (as struck) affecting the dentils on the right side of the obverse and the opposing area over MERI. A very attractive half cent and a neat mint error. Removed from a PCGS slab graded XF40 (the PCGS label is included, and it mentions the clipped planchet error). Weight 105.7 grains.

1794 C-5a R4+. VF-25. Small Edge Letters. Frosty steel and chocolate brown. Probably lightly cleaned long ago but the toning appears natural and the eye appeal is excellent. The planchet and surfaces appear flawless, but a strong glass reveals extremely faint roughness covering the fields and protected areas on the obverse. No verdigris. The only marks are a tiny pinprick under the L in LIBERTY and barely visible rim bruises at IT in UNITED and TA in STATES. These marks are trivial and not at all distracting. Sharply struck EDS, Manley state 1.0, without any die clashmarks. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CCW. This cataloger has seen many examples with the reverse rotated in a CW direction, but this is the first seen with a CCW rotation. The obverse is well centered on the planchet but the reverse is off slightly to K-5. Weight 107.0 grains.

The only marks are a faint vertical scuff on the cheek and a couple dull contact marks on the 9 & 4 in the date. Dark steel with lighter steel brown and chocolate highpoints. The highpoints are slightly glossy while the fields are closer to matte. The date is bold and the legends are complete and mostly strong, although RTY in LIBERTY and the opposing ICA in AMERICA are relatively weak due to an uneven strike causing weakness in those areas. The reverse is rotated 15 degrees CW. Weight 100.5 grains. This is the plate coin for the variety in Roger Cohen's first edition of his half cent book.

Sharpness 5 points better but there is a reddish chocolate brown stain on the cap extending down into the curls below, plus another small splash of this toning at BER, and these stained areas contain traces of extremely fine roughness. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and offers excellent eye appeal. No verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks, including a pair of small overlapping nicks in the field close before the eye and a tiny rim nick at the M in AMERICA. Frosty dark olive and steel with the splashes of reddish chocolate toning on the obverse already mentioned. LDS, Manley state 2.0 late, with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CCW. The softly struck area in the centers displays some of the usual microscopic planchet chips that didn't strike out completely. HALF CENT is weak and a few letters are missing completely, which is characteristic of the late die state. EDS with the usual soft strike in the obverse dentils from K-7 to K-9 and at the opposing dentils over D-STA. This striking characteristic is described by Manley and indicates this pair of dies was not in perfect axial alignment (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). 1796 Edwards Copy Kenney-1 Rarity 7-. MS-60. Frosty light greenish olive brown with small, subtle splashes of reddish chocolate toning in the field off the chin and traces of lighter brown and tan in protected areas of the reverse. A tiny spot of darker olive toning over the 9 in the date is the best identifying mark. The 7 and 9 in the date are clearly repunched and the entire piece is sharply struck. The Edwards copies or "counterfeits" were made by Dr. Frank Smith Edwards of New York sometime prior to his death in 1865. The dies were handmade and the workmanship is of good quality. The resulting design is a fairly accurate representation of the genuine article, but it is far from perfect. Reportedly only 12 examples were struck and the dies were destroyed prior to April 1866. Dr. Edwards' collection was sold in an auction conducted by Bangs, Merwin & Company in October 1865, and none of these copies was included in that sale. The first appearance of one of his copies in an auction occurred in 1866. The planchets used for these copies were cut from rolled copper and are a bit thinner and lighter than the genuine version. This cataloger has seen 8 of the known examples, and several of the planchets are slightly out-of-round, including the example offered here. A nice example of this extremely rare and famous copy. Weight 89.5 grains.
