1828 N-9 R4. EF-45 Plus. Sharpness closer to mint state but there is a spot of reddish chocolate toning over the N in CENT, and this spot was very lightly abraded in an attempt to minimize its impact. A similar spot of reddish chocolate toning is located between the A & M in AMERICA, and this spot displays extremely fine roughness but no hint of verdigris. Otherwise the surfaces and eye appeal of the cent are outstanding. Lustrous steel brown with faint wisps of darker steel brown toning mixed in on both sides. Sharply struck MDS.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.

1829 N-3 R3 Small Letters Reverse. VF-35. Choice glossy medium brown and chocolate with frosty mint luster covering the protected areas. The surfaces and eye appeal of this cent are consistent with a higher grade piece, but the usual soft strike on the hairbuns, stars, and wreath make assigning a higher grade difficult. The surfaces are flawless except for a dull horizontal scratch close over the NT in CENT and a small nick under that N. MDS.

1829 N-3 R3 Small Letters Reverse. Fine-15. Five points sharper but there is uniform faint granularity under a patina of frosty dark olive and steel toning. Lot 466
1829 N-9 R4 Small Letters Reverse Double Struck. VF-25. Ten points sharper but there is a scrape on the rim and dentils right of star 11 reaching nearly to the outer point of that star and a light rim bruise at the R in AMERICA. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and virtually flawless. Glossy chocolate brown with medium brown toning in protected areas, especially on the obverse. EDS with hard, slightly reflective obverse fields and no die cracks. This cent was clearly double struck. Both impressions were centered on the planchet, but the obverse was rotated about 20 degrees between strikes leaving an impression of the nose on the forehead, the chin on the nose, and other areas of the portrait on the top of the head and buns. The reverse also shows clear doubling, especially at UNIT and around the wreath, but the rotation is significantly less on that side. I suspect this piece became a brockage maker somewhere in the process of being struck more than two times as that's the only way I can explain the visible differences in rotation between the strikes. Regardless, this is a really neat mint error and an attractive cent in spite of the contact marks described here.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,500.
