1794 C-2a R2+. VG-8. Slightly sharper but the planchet is covered with extremely faint granularity that leaves the surfaces a bit dull. Slightly glossy dark steel with slightly lighter steel brown and chocolate highpoints. No verdigris, and the only mark is a fine scratch slanting through the C in CENT. EDS, Manley state 1.0, with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CW. The date is strong and the legends are clear. Weight 99.4 grains.

1795 C-4 R3. VF-25. Plain Edge. Five points sharper with extremely fine roughness covering the fields and protected areas on both sides. Partly glossy steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the devices. LDS, Manley state 2.0. A microscopic planchet clip, as struck, shows on the edge at K-4. Weight 78.7 grains.

Lot 252
1795 C-6a R2. VF-35. Plain Edge. Frosty chocolate brown with darker steel brown highpoints and traces of lighter brown toning in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. Only a few trivial signs of contact, including a short diagonal hairline scratch hidden in the hair at the back of the head. LDS, Manley state 2.0, with delicate swelling in the field at the dentil tips right of Y in LIBERTY. Struck very slightly off center to K-10.5, but the legends remain on the planchet.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

Lot 253
1795 C-5b R4. VF-35. Thick Planchet with Plain Edge. Five points sharper but there are a half dozen small contact marks, including tiny nicks on the obverse rim at K-12, K-4.5, and K-7.5 suggesting this piece may have been held on a display board using tiny tacks spaced around the coin. In addition, there is a tiny scratch at the N in UNITED and another at CA in AMERICA. No corrosion or verdigris. Rather glossy medium brown with a swipe of bluish steel toning at the date and a hint of reddish chocolate at the dentils off the chin. The date is a bit weakly impressed, as always on the thick planchet version of the variety, but it is complete and easily readable, and the legends are clear except for weakness in the center of the reverse. Weight 115.7 grains. Struck on a planchet made from a spoiled large cent that is thicker and far heavier than the usual rolled copper planchets at the 84 grain standard intended for half cents. A nice example of the thick planchet version, at the lower end of the condition census.
Estimated Value $3,500 - 4,500.

1797 C-1 R2. VF-30. 1 above 1 variety. Glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and the only defect is a tiny, barely visible bump on the edge at the D in UNITED. Excellent eye appeal. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0 late. The obverse die cracks and swelling are well advanced. The 1 above 1 feature remains bold.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,500.

Lot 256
1797 C-2 R3 Struck over Spoiled Cent. Good-5. Counterstamped "JC" on the portrait. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and free of notable defects. Lightly cleaned and retoned glossy steel and chocolate brown. Struck on a planchet from an off-center large cent, and bold evidence of the large cent is visible on both sides. A careful analysis of the cent design suggests the reverse is from 1797 S-120/121. The date of the half cent is complete and easily readable but not strong and the legends are complete except where affected by the counterstamp or large cent design. The off-center cent strike reduced the thickness of the planchet in the struck area, and the half cent dies did not contact the planchet sufficiently to leave half cent design in the area struck between the cent dies. A really neat error, one of the boldest cent undertypes seen on a half cent.
Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,500.
