This is a rare year as only ten different Weidenbaumtalers are listed in Hoffmeister. This lot is very special in that it is the only coin of the date that has six houses rather than four or five and Hoffmeister has not catalogued one with six houses.

The earlier Storm Talers and 1/2 Talers had a coat of arms, reverse, while the later ones had the crowned lion. Probably, the lion type is tougher to acquire. Fewer of them are seen. This is true of all denominations.

Star, Crowned Lion dividing date with GK above. Reverse Tree in storm, sun above with Hebrew "JEHOVAH", rain falling. Minor edge crack. Rarest date of all strom talers. NGC graded VF-35.

1639 signals the end of the minting of Storm Talers. In fact, very few were produced that year, and all are rare. No more large silver Talers were even produced until 1652. Apparently, the ravages of war were too much for the economy of Hesse. In 1652, the war was over, and the motif had outlived its usefulness.

Crowned Hessian Arms, date around and AG at lower left. Reverse Legend: "VELA VENTIS HIS LEVANTUR" "Under such circumstances things are going well". Sailing ship left. Well struck example with lovely old toning. Very Rare. NGC graded EF-45.

The ship Talers appeared in 1652 and were minted in small numbers until 1655. The symbolism of the "ship of state" sailing along on untroubled seas was not lost on the people of the time. Peace had arrived, and the quality of life was slowly improving.

Wilhelm VII came to the throne as an infant. Hedwig Sophia of Brandenburg acted as regent. When Wilhelm died in 1670, he was still a child, and had never produced any coins of note. In fact, the only Taler produced during his reign was with the name of Hedwig Sophia, as regent, and with no mention of his name. Only after his death, in 1670, were death commemoratives of 1/4, 1/2, and Taler size minted in small numbers listing his name. All are very rare.

Karl, despite ruling sixty years, produced almost no Talers. All are exceptionally rare. Karl's rather unremarkable reign is possibly best remembered for instituting the practice of hiring out soldiers as mercenaries to the other European powers.
