Lot 1920
Portugal. Royal Order of Santa Isabella Medal in Gold. Vintage mid-19th century, in gold and enamels, gross weight of 71.8 grams, 96mm x 52mm. Werlich-1051. A one class order established by John VI, as Prince Regent, on November 3, 1801 to favor his wife, Princess Charlotte of Spain, as an award to ladies of noble blood for their charitable acts, and was limited to only 26 members, the Princess and 25 noblewomen. The main obverse design portrays Saint Isabella proffering alms to a supplicant, while the reverse depicts a royal cypher with the Order's name and date in an enameled oval.
We have observed only a single other offering of this Order over the last twenty years, the example from the world famous American Numismatic Society Collection recently sold in London (DNW, 25 May 2006, lot 888). It was a much smaller gilt silver copy of mediocre quality of manufacture, ca. late 19th-early 20th century, though dated as earlier in the catalog description, with condition as follows "reverse center detached, otherwise good very fine". It realized 1000 Pounds plus the buyer's fee.
This superb specimen in Choice Nearly Mint State condition, has been meticulously hand carved of high karat solid gold by a master craftsman and obviously for a noble lady of considerable importance, if not the royal family itself. A diligent examination reveals two very tiny flakes at the sides of the crown's band, otherwise the enamel is excellent. Mounted on a section of the original pink and white ribbon, which was orginally formed into a bow for wearing. A specimen of outstanding beauty, quality and condition and Extremely Rare.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 8,000.
