Lot 4854
1916-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice frosty coin, just booming with satiny sparkle from the dies. A gorgeous Gem! The Great War then in progress (1914-18) caused major stress in the gold markets even in America which was thousands of miles from the action. Coinage of the $20 denomination ceased after the 796,000 twenties were made, and wasn't to pick up again until 1920. Pop 1,062; 124 finer in 66 (PCGS # 9169) .
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200.

Grant's birth, the only gold coins issued by the United States in 1922 are $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagles struck at Philadelphia and San Francisco (PCGS # 9173) .

1923-D $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-66. Nice golden toning. Old green holder. Bright golden color with a hint of pale yellow toning highlights the surfaces of this beautiful 1923-D twenty. Always on this issue, the devices that were left by the dies are extra sharp, showing precision manufacture due to careful quality control at the Denver Mint (which often slacked off on the lesser denominations). Everything is golden bright and sharply defined. Pop 1,365; 58 finer in 67 (PCGS # 9176) .

1925-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Lovely golden toning on both sides. A beautiful, frosty-gold coin from this difficult to find Mint, there are no unsettling abrasions on either side. The coin is very choice and free from toning spots. No more, no less, just as fully struck, as attractive, as a serious collector of Saint-Gaudens gold could ask for, with complete detail in the hair and face of Liberty, her drapery folds, and throughout the eagle's breast. The wing details too are noteworthy for their completeness.

Discussion among experts puts the 1924-D, 1924-S, and 1925-D as more common in Mint State than in circulated grades, while the 1925-S is more apt to be found with some degree of wear. In the finer Mint State grades like MS63, the 1925-S is one of the rarer Saint-Gaudens double eagles. A large percentage of the issue must have been stored in banks and at the U.S. Treasury when the government withdrew gold coinage from circulation in April 1933, and consigned it to the melting furnaces. It has to be assumed many, many 1925-S $20s were destroyed this way, which accounts for their rarity. Pop 75; 29 finer, 24 in 64, 2 in 65, 1 in 66, 1 in 67, 1 in 68 (PCGS # 9182) .
Estimated Value $18,000 - 19,000.

1926-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely gold and orange to pale rose-gold toning on both sides. There is a single single small mark that can be used as an identifier three sun rays to the left of the torch-end. An exemplary specimen! One whose rich frosty golden luster pulsates with an inner energy like atomic fission. At best, it is not easy to find such luster on a branch mint $20 struck in the Roaring Twenties. Not only is 1926-S scarce in lower Mint State grades, but it stands out forcefully as a Gem. So too crisp definition on the main devices counts for a lot. And what we find here is mathematically exact standards seen in the sharp features of the main devices and complete stars (46 of them) around the obverse inner rim. Pop 26; 2 finer in 66 (PCGS # 9185) .
Estimated Value $25,000 - 27,000.

1927 $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-64. Frosty with a blend of bright gold to lovely rose gold color, a well struck example of this plentiful date. The economy was booming in 1927, worldwide trade at its greatest extent after the recovery from the First World War, and so production of gold coins used in the export trade also boomed reaching a lofty level this year (PCGS # 9186) .

Lot 4873
1927-S $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-63. Lovely rich golden toning on both sides. Common wisdom has it that many if not most branch mint dates in the 1920s (with the exception of 1923-D) were melted in large numbers in the 1930s, accounting for their scarcity. This is surely true of the rare 1927-S, one of the rarest issues in the Saint-Gaudens series of double eagles. Of the known certified specimens, approximately two dozen have been graded by PCGS as of this writing (late-April), and smaller same number of higher grades coins have been seen. See below. The vibrant specimen offered in the present lot reveals warm apricot-gold to mustard-gold patina that shifts shades depending on where on the surface it lies; many of the same tints also cover all portions of the reverse. Each side is blended with full frosty luster. What's more, the design elements are sharply struck throughout. A modicum of low profile bagmarks does not affect the appearance in the least. The eye appeal of this lovely S-Mint specimen is "all there" in the idiom of modern American English. Pop 23; 13 finer; 5 in 64; 5 in 65; 2 in 66; 1 in 67. (PCGS # 9188) .
Estimated Value $45,000 - 48,000.

1929 $20 St. Gaudens. PCGS graded MS-64. Light orange toning on both sides. Well struck and choicefor the grade. The 1928 $20 was stored in large quantities (mainly overseas) and so is common. In fact, it is the last common date in the Saint-Gaudens series of double eagles. 1929 begins the division comprising the scarce to rare dates, again this is believed to be due to extensive melting in the 1930s. Every issue from 1929 through 1933 is either a rarity or a major rarity. Typical of this date, there is a very sharp strike and the fields and devices are fully lustrous with bright frosty surfaces. The quality, with the color and surface freshness, creates quite a good amount of eye appeal. The example on offer has all of the design detail sharp and delineated, without the random minor softness sometimes noted on portions of the Capitol dome near the hem of Liberty's flowing gown. The frosty nature unfolds not into the typical mélange of ancient colors but simply into light gold and reddish gold hues with all surfaces well preserved. We note a few marks in the fields and on the eagle but nothing even coming close to significance. All in all, this is a very appealing MS64 specimen. Current PCGS census: Pop 92; 27 finer; 22 in 65; 5 in 66. (PCGS # 9190) .
Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000.
