Lot 4804
1896 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-65. Very choice for the grade. Bright mint luster characterizes the surfaces on this lovely toned piece. It is gorgeous. It shines. Indeed, it outshines all others of its date and mint. Enough for the luster. In the end, it is this coin's detail that grabs a person's attention: devices foursquare and bold throughout. This includes incredible detail in the hair and on the eagle, with 13 full supporting stars on the obverse, and 13 full little pearls along the edge of the coronet with strong LIBERTY in raised letters thereon. The only thing to do is for bidders to pull their act together and start with a fresh slate when the opportunity knocks to place your bid or bids (since we expect there will be multiple bidders on this beauty). Pop 2; None finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 9029) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 18,000.

1897-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice golden toning. It should come as no surprise that the lovely MS64 we are offering is a desirable coin in this grade; the present example certainly is representative of this S-mint delivery. There are scant few abrasions on either side. The luster, which is richly colored orange-gold, simply glow with originality. The strike, too, shows the careful quality control supervision at the San Francisco Mint in the 1890s, a Liberty twenty whose important devices are all clear and bold. 1899-S $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice golden toning on both sides. "Frosty" is the word to describe this large and strongly made gold coin. For those who go for physical beauty in a coin, such a handsome $20 gold piece breathes with glinting luster. It has the biggest following, too, because any marks are relegated to obscurity by the choice surface condition. Given these imposing attributes, who can say where bidding will end? 1907 $20 St. Gaudens. High relief, wire rim. NGC graded Proof 64. In NGC holder 1854501-010. A untoned example. One of the most desirable coins ever struck by the U.S. government this Choice Proof displays rich smooth gold luster throughout and near superlative surfaces. The strike is most unusual on the High Relief twenties since it required upwards of 5 blows from the dies to create the entire design. We know that these were coined on the largest hydraulic press the Mint had available, using maximum settings to bring up the relief cut into the dies. As seen here, the standing figures of Liberty seems to jump right off the surface. On the reverse, an eagle soars against a curved ("convex") field of precious golden yellow. There are two small tick marks at Liberty's knees, rendering this one point shy of Gem class, but in all other ways it is outstanding and, as the saying goes, a cut above the rest. Pop 33; 34 finer. (PCGS # 9135) .

In 1908: The Model T made its debut in 1908 with a purchase price of $825.00. Over ten thousand were sold in its first year, establishing a new record. That puts the original price at 41.25 ounces of gold for one of the most famous cars in American (indeed, world) history. Forty-one of these 1908 $20 gold pieces. (Today, at $900 an ounce, the same weight in gold would equal $37,125 -- a good way of measuring the relative buying power of "hard" money then and now.).

1913 $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded Proof 66. Housed in NGC holder 3108965-007. Well struck. Impressive golden toning on both sides. The Proofs of 1913 are very rare. For that matter, the Proofs of the other Saint-Gaudens dates from 1908 to 1915 are desirable museum pieces that attract bidders from near and wide. 1913 is perhaps a little rarer than the previous two years. The mintage cannot have escaped notice of prospective bidders since it was a mere 58 pieces! What this means is that these lovely jewels were rare the year of issue. Discussion often focuses on the survival rate. It could be that as few as 25 to 35 examples may exist today. The best estimates come from the grading census of the two main services, NGC and PCGS, with the proviso that the numbers are likely inflated from duplicate submittals. (See below.)

The matte, or more properly, sand-blast surface on this coin is virtually identical to that found the Proofs of 1911 and 1912. Depending on the length and force of the sand-blasting process used on each coin, however, in color may vary from coin to coin. This lovely Gem resembles a 1908 with its deep brownish-khaki patina. The warm color is really quite beautiful. Such a coin can easily serve to give prominence to and highlight any collection of rare United States gold coins. We see and find no flaws, no copper staining, nothing in other words to cause a bidder to pass this chance to bid. Owning such a specimen would put a feather in the cap of the collector who is successful in outbidding the competition. Pop 12; 12 finer, 10 in 67, 2 in 68 (PCGS # 9210) .

1915 $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded Proof 65. Housed in NGC holder 1578899-001. A clear bold strike. Only 50 Proofs minted. Gorgeous sandblast finish leaves the surface with a smooth, matte finish. The 1915 double eagle is a key in the short run of Matte Proof Saint-Gaudens double eagle, a very popular coin when it has been offered for sale in public auction, which is only rarely. Not only is it desirable in an absolute sense which its rarity implies, with as few as 30 pieces known today out of an low total of only 50 coins, it happens to be recognized in the numismatic community as a condition rarity as well.

The surfaces of this Gem continue the "look" of the 1914 Proofs with a coarse grain sand-blast texture. The color is pale reddish gold. There are no marks to be found. There are, however, a few faint hairlines. Otherwise, the coin more than earns its coveted Proof 65 assignment from NGC with full applause from all who have the good fortune to view it in person, or we misjudge the situation! It clearly stands among the finer examples known (for which, see the following population figures), being surpassed by only 7 others in the NGC census. Our impressive offering of Proof coinage gives the buyer of Saint-Gaudens gold a choice of attractive twenties. Bidders will long remember this sterling example of the very rare 1915 date.
