Lot 4597
1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Only 55,680 minted. A nice strong "D" mint mark and a choice mint state example. Sun-fresh gold, indeed glowing with gold satin luster, and fully radiant with a near-perfect strike. Unlike the general run of dates of this caliber, the strike is thoroughly convincing in all places including the tips of the feathers, even where some weakness is usually found at ends due to slight insufficiency in the pressure transmitted from the dies. The upkeep of America's rare coins is the purview of numismatists stretching back (in some instances) more than 150 years. Those who were earlier custodians of this handsome 1911-D clearly did it proud by protecting it from harm and the elements. The next owner will come into possession of a very attractive coin that is clearly superior to most survivors from the small mintage. Pop 282; 21 finer, 18 in 65, 3 in 66 (PCGS # 7943) .
Estimated Value $24,000 - 26,000.

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Housed in an old green holder. Rich golden toning. The mint mark is very bold. A popular key date. A simply beautiful example of this rare, low mintage date, the strike is noteworthy for what is often a poorly produced type. The focal features are all clear and defined, while the luster is full with a richly frosted sheen. Fresh and original as any Indian quarter eagle seen. And where a collector might be expecting to see the usual departure in the sharp relief as found on a P-mint date, mainly in the centers of the coin where the design often failed to completely fill the dies on coins struck at the Denver Mint, this standout '11-D specimen takes the opposite road by being boldness personified! Pop 282; 21 finer, 18 in 65, 3 in 66 (PCGS # 7943) .

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC Approved. Well struck with lovely orange and golden toning. There are intervals of frost and satiny luster throughout this handsome coin. The Indian's features project a wonderful iridescent glow of color. Most special to anyone interested in the piece, the strike rates an A+ including a full, bold mintmark. Only 55,680 minted. Old green holder. Pop 282; 21 finer, 18 in 65, 3 in 66 (PCGS # 7943) .

1911-D $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice golden toning. Well struck and frosty, the surfaces choice with gleaming originality. Popular key date. Only 55,680 minted. The Denver Mint struck $2.50, $5, $10, and $20 gold pieces this year, and all but the $20 are low mintage rarities, seldom available in choice Mint condition (PCGS # 7943) .

1911-D $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-61. CAC Approved. A nice untoned frosty coin. Sharp mint mark. Probably a good many 1911-D Indian fives are not as carefully made as this piece, with no suggestion or even a whisper of weakness at the key areas such as the mintmark, the headdress feathers, or the eagle's wing. A fresh golden, bright example, as beautiful and lustrous as any in Mint State 61 condition (PCGS # 7943) .

Lot 4602
1911-D $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-61. A popular key date. Untoned. While the 1911-D quarter eagle is easily the key in this short series, and readily available (for a price) in conditions up to and including About Uncirculated, that is not to say it is at all readily found in true Mint condition. It becomes scarce at this tier of the grading scale. A lovely Mint specimen that exhibits above-average strike and a full-formed mintmark with extensive detail in the war bonnet feathers (no soft areas). The luster, however, is not as bursting and satiny as a choicer example, which explains the 61 grade, though much cleaner in terms of the fewness of marks, which is why we think it more enjoyable to study and consider for a date set (PCGS # 7943) .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 9,500.

1914 $2.50 Indian. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely natural golden toning. Well struck and beautiful. Even in average Mint State, the 1914 is typically offered with a sharp strike. The present spectacular Gem MS65 example does not disappoint in this regard either, with all devices crisply delineated from an obviously powerful die-struck impression. The color is mostly orange-gold in shade, warm and sunny, but we do note a somewhat reddish-tint at certain angles. This probably arises from the 10% copper alloy in the standard gold composition of America's quarter eagles (90% gold + 10% copper for hardening and wearability). Free of individual distractions, and housed in a protective PCGS holder. The 1914 ranks second in rarity among the 15 Indian Quarter Eagle deliveries both an absolute sense and is almost impossible to come by in this grade level. It is an important issue that collectors know as a real stumbling block to completing a Gem-quality set. Pop 43; 2 in 66; 1 in 67 (PCGS # 7946) .

Historic reference: With the approach of America's entry into the global First World War, the U.S. government closed the stock markets for about six months beginning in the summer of 1914. It has been said the main economic reason behind this decision was to block the access of Europeans to America's gold before the newly authorized Federal Reserve central bank had finished opening all 12 district offices and funded them with gold reserves. Within months of the reopening of the stock exchanges in December 1914, the Europeans, instead of wanting to redeem their deposits in U.S. gold, began flooding the country with gold themselves for purchases of wartime supplies and equipment. On the back of this European bloodbath, America's third central bank in a century got off to a gold-solid foundation.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 28,000.

Bright matte-finish gold color erupts from original surfaces untouched by anything but the lightest toning. A strong strike as well, characteristic of the careful minting that went into making Proofs, creates an advantageous coin for the focused collector. Only 117 proofs struck.
