Lot 4398
1875 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 66 Ultra Cameo. Housed in NGC holder 5489450-001. Only 20 Proofs minted. Incredible gem Proof of the key date gold dollar. Rich golden-orange color that defies adequate description. The connoisseur of numismatic items is how we choose to define this lovely, sparkling, and very rare gold dollar. The fields display virtual perfection, never cleaned, spot-free, and radiant. With regard to 1875-dated gold, most that are housed in collections are in Mint State or in Proof. Concerning the Proofs, very few match the level of excellence seen in the piece offered here. Why? The simple answer is that in the century and a quarter since they were made, they have fallen to the effects of mishandling or cleaning. The present example was one of a few that retains it freshness and vivid color.

The gold dollar series spans the years from 1849 to 1889. For the most part, each date and mintmark is obtainable. None is considered "impossible", though several are much rarer than the others. The stand-out rarity in the series is the 1849-C Open Wreath variety, seldom offered for sale. Counting only the main dates and not considering varieties, then award for rarity goes to this charming Proof 1875 gold dollar. A candidate for the Finest Known: Pop 4; none finer at NGC .
Estimated Value $35,000 - 40,000.
