Morgan Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 4127
1894 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded AU-55. Well struck and mostly untoned. A popular scarce date. The presence of two very shallow, light hairlines (one on the forehead, the other below the chin) can be easily brushed aside when considering the bold relief and streaming luster that expands over the surface on both sides. Though overshadowed in the literature by the more famous 1893-S Morgan, this 1894 issue from the Philadelphia has nearly the same low mintage, with high-grade survivors being exceedingly few and far between (PCGS # 7228) .
Estimated Value $1,900 - 2,000.

Lot 4133
1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. CAC Approved. Only 880 proofs struck. Natural uniform golden sunset toning that delicately deepens about the peripheries. A magnificent specimen this deepens into violet and blue iridescence in margin, all arising from the central brightness. It has been observed by numismatists that out of all Morgan silver dollar dates and major varieties, the 1895 has far and away the most prestige. First, fewer than a thousand Proofs were struck. Then, it seems no circulation strikes were issued at all. Whether or not the often-quoted figure of 12,000 business strikes is applicable has been seriously debated. As such, possibly as few as 600 to 700 Proofs are in collector's hands, the remainder having disappeared. Most, as the population figures given at the end of this description show, are lesser grade specimens. And what is more unfortunate, many have been dipped or subsequently hairlined to make them below "Choice" quality. The present spectacular Cameo Proof 66 coin is pristine and decidedly beautiful. For the money a coin certified as Proof 66 with the eye appeal offered here is the best value around.Pop 13; 18 finer, 11 in 67, 7 in 68 (PCGS # 7330) .

1895-S Morgan Dollar. Paramount Red holder graded MS65. Our grade is MS64. A worldly measure of pouring cartwheel luster livens up the wide expanse of surface on both sides of this scarce 1895-S Morgan dollar. The fields are for all intents and purposes gem quality with only minor diminishment from the MS65 grade, while the strike is intrepid enough to call for special mention. A very valuable property in this outstanding condition.

Where are the Redfield silver dollars now? Although dispersed a quarter of a century ago, they might be found anywhere today. Most are in PCGS or NGC slabs. Occasionally, you will find one dollar in one the original special Paramount holders with Redfield's name inscribed on it. Imagine, today when you purchase this silver dollar, you hold in your hand one of original silver dollars once owned by the eccentric LaVere Redfield. They caused a good deal of excitement in their day when they were fought over in a Nevada courtroom and then finally distributed into the marketplace in 1976 and 1977 and beyond (PCGS # 7238) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

1899-S Morgan Dollar. Paramount Red holder graded MS65. We agree with the grade. A satiny beauty, squarely in the Gem league. Smooth, rolling luster and splashes of rich gold at the rim mingle on the satiny gem surfaces. Full cartwheel radiance.

LaVere Redfield's passion for accumulating silver dollars matured when he moved to Reno, Nevada. From time to time he would go to the bank and buy some bags of 1,000 silver dollars. (Back then US silver dollars could be acquired for face value and were readily available at all banks.) He'd take them home in his pickup truck and stash them away. Seems word started spreading about his love for silver dollars and he was robbed more than once. Probably because of the robberies he began acquiring his bags from as far away as Pennsylvania, picking them up in person and hauling them back in his pickup. In the end, he's accumulated more than 400,000 pieces! Lavere Redfield's cache of Morgan and Peace type silver dollars became known as the "Redfield Hoard". It was the largest silver dollar hoard discovered in decades. After his death, his silver dollar hoard was sold at auction. The price paid by the winning dealer was a record breaking 7.3 million dollars (PCGS # 7262) .
Estimated Value $800 - 900.

1902-S Morgan Dollar. Paramount Red holder graded MS65. Our grade is MS64. This is a lovely, radiant near-Gem, both sides being essentially untoned except for a bit of color at the rims, with frosty, silver-white luster over both sides. Judged from an aesthetic standpoint, this '02-S is also possessed of a much finer strike than is typically found for the issue.

A good number of the bags Redfield saved were "S" mint Morgan style silver dollars produced at the San Francisco United States Mint from 1878 to 1921. He also had a fair number of "CC" Carson City United States Mint dollars and even had some bags of the Peace style silver dollars, mainly "S" mint. Most coins graded various degrees of mint Uncirculated condition, although about 15% were said to be circulated. To sell them, some coin dealers packaged them in special holders as here with labels indicating they came from the Redfield hoard (PCGS # 7282) .
Estimated Value $850 - 900.
