Capped Bust Half Dimes

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3917
1831 Capped Bust Half Dime. NGC graded MS-65. Mostly untoned except around the edges. Satin surfaces that are pleasantly frosted with sleek, glowing silver color. A dullish impression was left by the recoil of the dies that struck most bust half dimes in the 1829-1837 period; however, we're pleased to see and report that this 1831 is a splendid exception to that rule. A very bold Gem BU. Pop 56; 45 finer, 30 in 66, 2 in 66 star, 9 in 67, 3 in 67 star, 1 in 68 star (PCGS # 4278) .
Estimated Value $2,300 - 2,400.

1833 Capped Bust Half Dime. NGC graded MS-67. A georgeous gem loaded with luster. Vivid toning favoring electric-blue irridescence seems to explode from the surface in a fireworks display of attraction. Pop 12; 1 finer in 67 star (PCGS # 4280) .

Lot 3921
1837 Liberty Seated Half Dime. No stars, small date. NGC graded MS-65. Nicely toned on both sides. A nice bold strike. Sparkling iridescence permeates both sides of this satiny (and indeed colorful) beauty with a life of its own. The colors shimmer with gorgeous iridescence. The first year issue of a new design is often tempting for buyers. In the case of the 1837 half dime, the first year also comprises a scarce two-year design by Christian Gobrecht noted designer and mint engraver at the time. The familiar figure of a seated Liberty is positioned in a simple, plain field. Later, the Mint would add 13 stars around her in a crescent. 1837 was an interesting period in American history. The two term president, Andrew Jackson would switch places in office in January that year with incoming Martin Van Buren, his hand-picked successor. The state of the nation was in turmoil (as it often was), but that did not hinder distribution of the sweet little half dimes of the new seated Gobrecht design (PCGS # 4312) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,300.
