Ecuador, is located directly on the Equator and that is how its name originates. It was the first Spanish colonial country to raise the banner of revolution in 1809, and Quito, its capital, gained the sobriquet," Luz de America" for that first revolutionary activity. It became an independent nation, breaking from Gran Colombia in 1830.

Ecuador was part of the Incan Empire. In fact, Atahualpa, son of an Incan Emperor, ruled the northern half of the Empire in Quito. He precipitated a Civil War, which he won, against his brother Huascar in Cuzco. This war devestated the Empire, and facilitated the conquest of the area by the Spanish conquistador, Pizzaro, soon afterward.

Ecuador is also in possession of the Galapagos Islands, 600 miles west of the mainland. Here is probably the best environment to study and observe natural animal species in their own, relatively undisturbed, environment. From giant tortoises to boobie birds, to marine iguanas, the experience of being an amateur naturalist is unforgettable. It was here that Charles Darwin spent much of his time studying and organizing his ideas on "The Origin of Species".

One of the great naturalist experiences in the world is to travel the "Avenue of the Volcanoes" in Ecuador. This is a valley almost 200 miles long that contains some of the most awesome and impressive volcanoes in the world. Despite the fact that this area is so close to the Equator, many are snow covered. Probably the most famous is Cotopaxl, believed to be the highest active volcano in the world at close to 16,000 feet.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.
