Japan. Yen, 1870 (Meiji-3). Y-5; Dav-273. Type 1. Light mottled toning. NGC graded MS-63.

Japan in the year 1867 entered the modern era by having the traditional Shogunate resign. This was replaced by a government centered around the rule of the Emperor. Emperor Mutsuhito established the Meiji Era in 1867, and the coinage was modernized to a western standard. The large silver 1 Yen offered here, was the first large silver coin of this era.

Japan. Trade Dollar, 1877 (Meiji-10). Y-14; Dav-275. Fully lustrous with brilliant fields. NGC graded MS-64.

Issued to compete with the United States, British and French trade dollars of the period. Note the words, "Trade Dollar" in English. An indication how westernized the coinage had become. Issued as a type for only three years.
