Lot 901
India - Madras Presidency. Half Pagoda, ND (1808-1811). Dav-247; KM-353. 21.12 grams. Large English Lettering. Gopuram pagoda flanked by stars; bilingual inscription within garter border. Reverse: Deity standing facing, flanked by cult objects; bilingual inscription within banner. Bold, sharp strike, with minor evidence of adjustment marks at the peripheries. Pleasing medium toning, with hints of iridescence within the inscriptions. NGC graded MS-64.

Madras was founded in 1639 by the British. The British then built Fort St George which became an important British factory in the area in 1641. The area was still technically under local Indian rule, but effectively, the British could do what they wanted. It became one of Britain's most important trading centers in the world. The city has grown into an urban metropolis of over 7 million people, and has been renamed Chennai.
