Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 880
Belgian Congo. 5 Francs, 1887 (Brussels). Dav-10; KM-8.1. 24.29 grams. Leopold II, 1865-1909. Bearded head left. Reverse: Crowned arms supported by two rampant lions, heads reverted, on banner with motto. NGC graded Proof 63.

King Leopold II of Belgium owned the Belgian Congo as his personal territory. There was no attempt to rule democratically, or even fairly. In fact, this was probably the most egregious example of selfish colonialism in all of the African colonies. Leopold was forced, by world opinion, to cede the colony to the Belgian government in 1908, who actually did a decent job in eradicating disease, educating the populace and bringing in modern railraoads and ports.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,500.
Illustrated in Money of The World, coin 137.
