Impressive South Italian Bell Krater, c. 375-350 B.C. Likely Lucanian, this is a piece fit for a museum. Kraters were bowls with wide mouths, used for mixing water with wine. The painted procession is led by a male followed by a female tambourine player and a male youth carrying a thyrsos with an ivy leave above. The reverse portrays three draped youths with the central figure holding a stick and the final male fully covered in his himation, or cloak. Linear horizontal rows of palmettes and labyrinths enclose the depictions. In excellent condition, there is skillful restoration around the handles, and a small chip at the base with very little repainting. Height: 15¾"; Diameter at mouth: 16½".

Lot 1468
Bronze Thai Buddha Head. From the great age of Siamese hand craftsmanship, c. 1680. Somewhat smaller than the other bronze Thai Buddha head offered, but the height is also 2¾", owing to the fact that it retains intact the topknot (or "knob") surmounting the headdress, which is normally missing. This rare example was never a "rescue" from an archaeological "dig," but was above ground during its entire existence; this is readily apparent from the absolute absence of injury or restoration, the surface clarity, and absence of patina caused by saline deposits, etc. in the soil. Total height of 4½", including a custom-designed, museum-style wooden mount.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.
