On the advice of his benefactor and in honor of Russian Emperior Nicolas I who visited city of Jaroslavl at this time he created a painting with the lengthy title (aproximate translation), "Peter The Great During a Church Ceremony, Observing the Painter A. He studied at the Academy under the supervision of professor A. Markov. In 1845 he was awarded the Large Silver Medal, then four years later he received a Gold Medal for his 1849 painting, " Ian Usmovets Stopping an Angry Bull". For his further good work he received a government grant and was sent to Europe to study, traveling through Germany, Belgium, France, Spain and also Syria and Egypt. For his painting "Good News", he achieived the title of Academician. During this period Sorokin created six religious icons and wall paintings for the Orthodox Church in Paris. In 1859 he returned to Russia and began work at the Moscow College of Painting and Sculpture as an instructor and remained in this position until his death in 1892, having received in 1878 the title of professor for his achievements in painting at the Moscow Church of Jesus.

Abram Krol. The Thora. An excessively rare full set of Abram Krol's signed proofs for his magnum opus, the illustrations of the Five Books of Moses (Suite de 187 bruins pour La Pentateuque). The set is comprised of 187 Abram Krol signed engravings, each marked and approved as artist's proofs of his illustrations of the The Pentateuch.

All are 12" x 8", titled and signed by Krol in pencil:
Genesis, 50 plates
Exodus 40 plates
Leviticus, 27 plates
Numbers, 36 plates
Deuteronomy, 34 plates

The set is complete. The first edition carried 187 plates; a 1993 edition (Paris), 189. This is the 1967 edition. Other editions have appeared in Haifa (1969) and Troyes (1988).

As of this writing, we know of only two full sets: this one, and the one at the Library of Congress, which was a gift of the artist. This set is deemed superior to the set in the Library of Congress, because each engraving bears Krol's approval - "épreuve graveur," in the lower left corner, whereas the Library's set is merely numbered.

The engravings are contained in one portfolio; condition is excellent.

[Besler, Basilius (1591-1629)] Barba Caprae. Scorsonera Latifolia. Copperplate engraving of black salsify and goatsbeard from the Hortus Eystettensis (Garden of Eichstätt), 19¾" x 16¾".Matted and framed to an overall size of 26" x 23". Fine; one faint horizontal fold.

In the early 1600s, Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen commissioned Basilius Besler, an apothecary, chemist, and botanist in Nuremburg, to create a comprehensive botanical garden in Eichstät devoted to flowering plants, many of which were imported from the Americas and the Ottoman Empire. With a team of draftsmen and engravers, Basler documented the garden in all four seasons. Over 1,000 varieties of flowers are depicted in the 367 engraved and colored plates made from Basler's drawings, most of them showing the flowers in their actual size.

Latin descriptions were printed on the backs of the images and anticipated the use of binomial denominations, which would be made official by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753. The Hortus Eystettensis is the first collection of large-folio natural history botanicals. Two other editions were issued (1640 and 1713) with the same plates; we don't know which of the three editions contained the engraving offered here, but the copper plates were melted down in 1817 by the Royal Mint in Munich. The actual gardens were destroyed by Swedish troops in 1634, but a modern reconstruction of the original garden opened to the public in Eichstätt in 1998.
