Sanborn Insurance Maps of Watertown, New York, 1909. By the Sanborn Map Co., 11 Broadway, New York, 1909, with renewed 1937 copyright and with corrections up to 1955 pasted to the front end page; a "New Index" from 1931 is pasted over the original index. Bound, hard-cover volume of 75 maps, 25" x 21"; leather tabs for title page and for maps, which are large street plans at a scale of 1000 feet to one inch; album pages are heavy card stock, with lithographed map parts laid to the pages. The title page is followed by an index with the names of churches, schools, businesses, etc., and a master index (updated to 1953) showing the entirety of the mapped area and the sheet numbers for each large-scale map, and information such as building composition, location and number of fire hydrants, location of sprinklers, windows, pipes, etc. The maps include outlines of each building and outbuilding, street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, natural features such as rivers and canals, railroad corridors, and other information. The names of most public buildings, churches and companies are noted. Album covers are worn and stained, spine is damaged and broken at the front joint, but maps are intact, with light toning. The maps should be examined in person to be appreciated.

Sanborn maps were originally created for assessing fire insurance liability in urban areas in the United States. Between 1867 and 1970, some 12,000 U.S. towns and cities were mapped. They are wonderful research tools and are not often found in private hands.

Sanborn Insurance Maps of Malone, New York - 1909. By the Sanborn Map Co., 11 Broadway, New York. A bound volume (paper covers) of 17 double-page maps, 21" x 25"; the front cover is present but separated. These maps, which are lithographed street plans at a scale of 50 feet to one inch, are in fine condition, with minor toning. The title page is followed by an index with the names of churches, schools, businesses, etc., and a master index showing the entirety of the mapped area and the sheet numbers for each large-scale map, covering four to six blocks, and general information, such as population, the water facilities and the resources of the fire department. The maps include outlines of each building and outbuilding, the location of windows and doors, street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, fires walls, natural features such as rivers and canals, railroad corridors, composition of building materials, and other information. The names of most public buildings, churches and companies are noted.

Descripsion del Reyno de Galizia. By Ioannes Baptista Vrints, c. early 1600s, 15" x 19", hand colored, matted and framed to 20½" x 23½". Title cartouche at upper left with dedication and infomation about ancient and current boundaries of Galicia. A large decorative cartouche with angels at upper right says "Hoc mysterivm firmiter profitemvr" ["We emphatically declare this to be a mystery"], and information about Galicia's natural abundancies is at lower left, along with Vrints name and the fact that he was a follower of Ortelius; a scale of Spanish leagues is at lower right. The seas hold two ships and a sea creature. Very good; some toning on left side from color transfer.

Nova Famigerabilis Insulae Ac Ducatus Rugiae Descriptio. By E. Lubino (Amsterdam, Mercator-Hondius, 1637), 17" x 22". Very good, strong impression. Handcolored except for 30 small panels on either side holding coats of arms from Rugiae's old families. Title cartouche plus another bearing the coat of arms of Philippo Iulio Principi Rugiae. With ships, sea monsters, a windrose and a compass for German miles. Text in French on verso. Very good. Some toning and light soiling.

Americae nova Tabula. Auc: Guiljelmo Blaeuw, c. 1640. Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638). Copperplate engraving of the Western Hemisphere with full color, 16½" x 22". Carte-à-figures, featuring ten small panels of native figures along the sides and nine small panels of cities along the top. Inset of Greenland and Iceland. Eight sailing ships and four sea creatures fill the seas. Light soiling with a few small closed edge tears and a small area of paper replacement in the lower margin and at left tips. Attractively matted and framed to an overall size of 21¾" x 27". A beautiful and important map by the renowned Dutch cartographer.

Tractus Australior Meridionales a Rio de la Plata per Fretum Magellanicaum ad Toraltum (Frederick de Wit, c.1675). A striking sea chart depicting the southern part of South America, from the Rio de la Pla to the Straits of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego, 19" x 22", original color. A wonderful title cartouche shows the natives offering gifts to the Europeans. A group of ships engage in battle off the coast. The upper corners have glue show-through; the upper left corner is separated but present; otherwise, light toning and a couple of creases. Matted and framed to 20¾" x 25". A very attractive display map.
