Archive of Maryland Military Documents In the War With Mexico. An archive of 138 letters and documents directly connected to Maryland and its participation in the Mexican War. The first document is General Order, No. 1, the dramatic call to arms issued by Thomas G. Pratt, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Maryland Militia, and addressed to John N. Watkins, Adjutant General Maryland Militia, Annapolis, 1846 May 20. In part: "Sir: -- Our country is at war with Mexico, and there are indications which can not be disregarded of approaching difficulties with a more powerful enemy. It is, in my judgment necessary, that the Militia of the State should be thoroughly re-organized, that Maryland may be placed in a position to meet as it becomes her, the existing, or any exigency that may occur…." Instructions are given regarding defining the bounds of the brigade, regimental and company districts, appointing officers, enrolling men subject to militia duty, and mustering the militia force. Copies of this order were to be sent "to each Major-General-Genenral, Brigadier-General, Colonel, Lieutenant-Colonel, and Major now in commission…. " This copy was sent to Brig. Genl. (Tench) Tilghman (descended from General Washington's aide-de-camp by the same name) and signed by Adj. Gen. John N. Watkins. This is the first such document we have seen. Some stains and marginal wear.

INCLUDED WITH THIS PIECE ARE OVER 135 DOCUMENTS DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO MARYLAND AND ITS PARTICIPATION IN THE MEXICAN WAR. They include documents regarding weapons and uniforms, brigade orders, General Order No. 3, numerous orders, letters between generals, and much more. Many famous Maryland names can be found in this archive. A list with a brief description of each item is available for those seriously interested.
