Bertrand, Henri Gratien, Comte (1773-1844) French military engineer; close friend and confidant of Napoleon I and his companion in exile. His diaries were published as Cahiers de Sainte-Hélène. Manuscript Note Signed "Le général Bertrand," 4" x 6¼", n.p., n.d. Another hand has written, "Sir Barney request my autograph for his friend Mr. Causter of the City of Washington" and the general signed below. A beautiful black wax seal with Bertrand's coat of arms is intact at lower right. Housed in an oval 9½" x 11½" frame.

Gallway, Henry, Earl and Viscount and Baron of Port Arlington (1648-1720) DS ("Gallway") as General and Commander in Chief of Her Majesty's Forces in Portugal, 1p, 8" x 7", Lisbon, 1705 July 14. Very good; mounted on backing board. An order to George Day, Commander of the Train of Artillery in Portugal, to deliver to Captain Crawford 147 tents for the use of the Earl of Donegall's Regiment of Foot. Henry de Massue, Marquis de Ruvigny was a French soldier and diplomat and a Huguenot. Upon the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, he left France and went into the service of William II. He served as Lord Justice of Ireland from 1697 to 1701; in 1697, he was made Earl of Galway, a title which died with him.

[Lord Nelson] Emma, Lady Hamilton (1765-1815) Best known as the mistress of Lord Nelson. Sheet Music signed "Lady Hamilton / July 19, 1801 [or 07]" at top right corner, 12½" x 9¼", n.p. The music is "Hannam's Collection of Dances &c." The music is matted with an image of Emma and framed to an overall size of 17" x 20¾". Emma was the wife of the British ambassador to Naples when she met Nelson; she became as reviled by the English public as Nelson (who abandoned his wife for her) was revered. After his death in 1805 at Trafalgar, the codicil to his will which included Emma was ignored, and she lived and died in poverty. They had a daughter, Horatia.

Marlborough, John Churchill, Duke of (1650-1722) British soldier, considered one of the greatest generals of all time. DS ("Marleborough") as "…Commander in Chief of all the English Troops…of the States General of the United Provinces," 9¼" x 15¼", vellum, Corkpitt, 1690 July 15. Two weeks after the decisive battle of the Boyne (the last attempt by the Jacobite supporters of James II to restore him to the British throne), Marlborough promotes Ensign William Hay. Very good; most of paper seal is missing; darkened areas and fold tear in text, affecting text but not the signature. Matted with a steel engraving of Marlborough and a October 6, 1690 issue of The London Gazette mentioning Marlborough and framed to an overall size of 27½" x 20".

Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, Duke of (1769-1852) British soldier and statesman; considered one of the greatest generals of all time; twice prime minister. ALS ("Wellington"), 1p, 9" x 5", Quinta de Granicha, 1811 June 8. Written during the Peninsular Campaign of the Napoleonic Wars to Admiral Berkeley, asking him to give passage on a Man of War to "General Abada, who is appointed to Command the Troops in Gallicia (?)…is desirous of proceeding to his Command by Sea…." Matted to show the docket, with a color image of Wellington, to an overall size of 14¼" x 21¼".
